Kick-off meeting: PACESETTERS Project - A new research and innovation action funded by Horizon Europe, Monday 11 March at Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU). Curious about how arts and culture can not only adapt to the climate crisis, but also drive the transition to a sustainable and regenerative economy? On Monday 11 March, NTNU’s art academy will launch a new research and innovation action funded by Horizon Europe: PACESETTERS will explore not only the theoretical but also the very practical potential of art and culture, heritage and creativity to become a key driver of the climate transition. The project aims to generate knowledge from collaborative, artistic and practice-based research to keep pace with the transition. Over the next three years, we will propose and test innovative and sustainable ideas across creative disciplines to set the pace of the transition. Finally, we will evaluate strategies for future valorisation to push the pace of transition. Join us in Trondheim or at Zoom, register and read more here: https://lnkd.in/dwUFB-zA #ntnu #HorizonEurope #research #innovation #artisticresearch #climatetransition #neweuropeanbauhaus #europeangreendeal

🟣 Today we are introducing the IMMER Lab! Based in Strasbourg 🇫🇷 and Kehl 🇩🇪 this case will work on increasing local resilience regarding mobility and energy issues in the urban areas along both sides of Rhine river, by using foresight activities based on narratives. The lab will propose the use of PORTOLAN charts as a way forward for urban management in cross-border contexts. 📍IMMER lab will be managed by the Hochschule für öffentliche Verwaltung Kehl in partnership with Association de Prospective Rhénane (APR). The lab will collaborate with the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena & Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI during implementation. I was pleased to contribute to the ongoing EIT HEI Initiative event today in Brussels to once again represent EURASHE, E.I.N.S. E³UDRES² European University Entrepreneurship and Innovation Network for Smart and Sustainable Regions and Fachhochschule St. Pölten. My main issues: - It is all about passionate and open-minded colleagues. With support from the EIT HEI Initiative we have enabled and empowered these „Ent-re-e-novators“ (Entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, innovators) who drive necessary change and transformation of higher education. - We have to re-shape higher education institutions and connect them closer to society and industries in order to co-create impact and help to solve societal, ecological and economic challenges. We have to re-think our roles to overcome an increasing lack of trust in science that is not only widespread amongst people that we first leave behind and then blaim to vote far right- or left-wing. Also CEOs of successful companies, like for instance Leonhard Birnbaum in an interview in DIE ZEIT a few month ago, point out the scientists are irrelevant for him, as they are only able to answer his questions in 20 or 30 years time, but he has to take decisions and act right now… - We have to manage complexity, act opportunity driven and - at least from time to time - leave our cosy scientific bubbles and academic ivory towers. We have to join all our forces and co-create mutual benefits together with various stakeholders. We have to build on the diversity of European regions as most relevant source for both innovation and resilience. Yes, we are „Stronger Together“, as we recently pointed out during our EURASHE Annual Conference.
📢EURASHE President Hannes Raffaseder today joined a #PolicyPanel at the closing event of the EIT HEI Initiative pilot phase, alongside Antoaneta Angelova-Krasteva - European Commission, Valtencir M. Mendes - UNESCO and Heinrich Arnold, EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology Board member. Secretary General John Edwards is also involved in the event leading a workshop on #SmartSpecialisation. The HEI Initiative, funded by #HorizonEurope recognises HEIs as the pivotal actors in #regional and #European innovation ecosystems. EURASHE, whose members are deeply embedded in their regional innovation ecosystems, organised a webinar with the #EIT on the last call and plans another for the next call this autumn. Experiencing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) at the UFZ in Leipzig. This week we embarked on a transformative journey with the participants of the 88th International Short Course on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to Emerging Water Challenges at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig. Our goal was to immerse ourselves in the world of NbS, explore a practical case study of green roof research, and gain valuable insights into the tools for implementing NbS while addressing critical water and environmental issues. Our visit featured dynamic discussions on the application of NbS, providing a holistic perspective from the global to the regional level. We were privileged to work with our expert moderators, Dr. Diana Dushkova and Mr. Frank Hüesker. Dr. Dushkova's research focuses on blue-green urban transformation and the transformative potential of NbS, while Dr. Hüesker's expertise lies in water governance and NbS, with a focus on evolving actor constellations, power dynamics and problem perceptions in sustainability transitions. Our enriching exchange with them provided participants with a variety of methodologies for effectively integrating NbS projects at the local level. We believe that experiential learning is the most effective way to unlock the vast potential and multiple environmental, social and economic benefits of NbS. Not only do they improve water and air quality, mitigate urban heat, manage flooding, and increase green space, but they also contribute to the well-being and health of the communities they serve. Research shows that NbS initiatives can provide a staggering 66 different services, spanning provisioning, regulating, cultural and support services. In addition, the visit offered participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in German culture, exploring the nation's social development over time, music, politics, and history during a guided tour at the Forum of Contemporary History. This well-rounded experience not only enhanced their understanding of NbS, but also enriched their cultural and historical knowledge. Thank you to the facilitators and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ) for the engaging and informative seminars, lectures, and excursions that highlighted the importance of co-creating NbS in theory and practice. #UNEP #UNESCO #BMUV #UBA #TUD #CIPSEM #UFZ #waterchallenges #waterislife #NbS #globalgoals #scholarship #SDGs #sustainability #Leipzig #ForumofContemporaryHistory

🌐 #NatalieProject #FollowPartner Today, we present our partner: Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). 🌟 VUB is an open and multicultural academic institution with 20,000 students from 145 nationalities following the existing principles of the Enlightenment: critical thinking, free inquiry, and humanism. The Department of Water and Climate – VUB focuses on the numerical modeling of the quantity and quality of surface, soil water, glacier water, and groundwater from the local to global scale. The groundwater research group is part of the #NatalieProject, working on Demo Site #5 “Blue Horizon Limburg”. 🎯 As the goal of this demo site is evaluating the feasibility of ASR (Aquifer Storage and Recovery) in a deep aquifer as a sustainable approach to secure drinking water demand, the groundwater research group, led by Prof. Marijke Huysmans, is working on the development of a groundwater model to evaluate multiple scenarios, assess the impact of heterogeneity and uncertainty, as well as environmental implications. Getting all on board – Can Multiple-Helix deliver the answer? SIRR’s slogan is “All onboard in rural societies for a fair future !”. Therefore, all local hubs in SIRR work towards engaging diverse stakeholders and sectors into meaningful projects and initiatives that contribute to transform our societies towards sustainability. But this is often challenging, as having a higher diversity in the innovation ecosystem also brings a higher effort in communicating and coordinating for hubs. Within the SIRR-project, knowledge creation and transfer happen hand in hand between knowledge partners and local hubs. A first foundational element of what Multiple-Helix could be in theory and practice, was recently submitted for peer review in a scientific journal. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog article explaining the background and application of a Multiple-Helix Approach in local and regional sustainable development!
