This was the shower block at parrramatta jail. I remember running to line up hopeful the hot water wouldn’t run out before it was my turn. Having to shower in the open while 60 men stood around watching eagerly waiting their turn. One of the many dehumanising experiences that result from incarceration. Understanding how to introduce humane practices into traumatic environments to increase instances of joy and hope is a different approach that will improve outcomes for people impacted by the criminal justice system. Lloyd Consulting Co takes a humane approach building on a foundation of safety first that supports people to become personal responsible. #changemakers #otherwordz #languagematters #diversityequityinclusion

At a recent forum, State Attorney Candidate for Palm Beach County Gregg Lerman spoke from his experience of the tragedy of incarceration of children. Kids aren't born bad, and if we reach them early enough, in the #schoolsystem, we can hopefully make a difference in at-risk youth development and prevent some of the peer pressure and environmental influences from taking hold and leading a child into the #criminaljusticesystem. In a timely coincidence, today's #MiamiHerald featured a Special Report titled "Harsh Florida Law Sees More Black Kids Tried As Adults Than White Kids" The Report noted that "thousands of children in Florida who have been tried as adults in the last three decades under a state law — “direct file” — that gives prosecutors unfettered discretion to remove children from the juvenile system and try them under the harsher penalties adult offenders face." The Herald study found "Black kids...make up a disproportionate — and growing — share of the children whose cases have been moved to adult court, according to the most recent 15 years of data available. The share of children transferred to the adult system who were Black has steadily ticked up from around 58% in 2008 to roughly 65% in 2022. Adjusting for the type and number of charges children faced, the Herald found that Black kids were roughly two times more likely to be transferred to adult court than white kids. Miami-Dade and Broward counties had the highest share of minority children charged as adults over the last 15 years." Although #palmbeachcounty statistics were not cited in the article, this is a Statewide Problem in all 67 counties in Florida, including Palm Beach County. "Florida’s juvenile system, plagued with instances of excessive force, sexual misconduct, psychological abuse and inadequate medical care, is hardly a cakewalk. But it is still geared toward rehabilitation rather than punishment, legal experts told the Herald. After conviction in adult court, minors typically have to deal with harsh prison conditions and the consequences of having a felony record for the rest of their lives. They are released into society as adults after spending crucial developmental years behind bars with limited access to education and training on the basics of how to live as independent individuals. They struggle to find jobs and housing, often end up committing offenses again – and the cycle continues. Because children and teens are still developing reasoning skills, they are inherently less responsible for their behavior than adults, several psychologists said. Serving time in an adult prison, with its more punitive approach, can also harm their development and have a lasting impact on their ability to reenter society." TEDx Speaker,Re-Entry Expert Coach ,Best Selling Author,Transformative Keynote Speaker, Trainer, and Breakout Facilitator. Formerly incarcerated
Yesterday, I had an inspiring conversation with the Mayor Daniel Rickenmann of Columbia, SC, on his podcast about creating opportunities for individuals returning to society after incarceration. We discussed four key initiatives: 1. Partnering with businesses across the state to develop hiring programs. 2. Providing coaching and support for those entering the workforce. 3. Offering financial education to ensure long-term success. 4. Creating violent prevention programs to deter youth from entering the Juvenile Detention System. Together, we can make a difference and build a more inclusive community! Business owners if you’re interested in learning more about creating an opportunity to hire individuals with a felony conviction. Author of The Prison Officer (released 9th May 2024) Writer and public speaker: I'm on a mission to tell another side to prison life. Please reach out if you'd like to find out more.
I have a couple of questions for you... 🎤 Would YOU hire a prison leaver? 🏳 Do you work for an organisation who WOULD hire a prison leaver? 🏅 ...Or who ALREADY hires prison leavers? 🏓 ...Or maybe who is THINKING about #banningthebox? 📣 As part of my mission to share with the world the privilege I had of getting to know the men I met inside - those men behind the grim mugshots and the threatening headlines - I am spending the next few months with businesses, demystifying the world of prison and its inhabitants. So, if this sounds like something your team would be interested in hearing about - I'd love to come along and talk with you. For an hour, for a day, online - you name it, just reach out out to me on here 🎯 My premise? Did anyone else watch the viral #AssumeICan advert on World Down Syndrome Day this year? If you haven’t - watch it now. Like a kick in the gut it made me aware of prejudices I didn’t even know I had, but what’s more it had the power to instantly reverse them. We all hold stereotypes, it’s embedded in our human psychology. They may not even be about attributes we consider to be negative, but they are often socially constructed and carry the risk of imposing unnecessary limitations on groups and individuals. However, we do have the power to modify our own stereotypes and crucially, to prevent them from becoming prejudices. And I’m convinced that if given the chance to overcome a prejudice, most people would grab it with both hands. I’m also convinced that storytelling has the power to do this. So, through stories of the weird, the wonderful and the downright unfathomable, and a hefty dose of discussion I am setting out to challenge everything you thought you knew about people in prison. As always, I’d love to hear from you. Gen #Bcorp #banthebox #corporatesocialresponsibility #prison #publicspeaking

What are your thoughts about becoming a Ban the Box employer? Are you a #bcorp looking to create a more inclusive hiring strategy? Gen Glaister is on a mission to fight the many-layered bias levelled against prison leavers through sharing her own experiences of working alongside them. If you work in an organisation which is open to and interested in fostering conversations around D&I, social mobility and uplift, empowerment and opportunities and would like Gen to come in and talk to your team, please get in touch with her. She will captivate you with her tales from inside, challenge your [often subconscious] preconceptions and get people talking and feeling inspired. Recent research by Sodexo showed that in 2023 two third of senior leaders said they'd be hiring ex-offenders. The Food and Drinks industry is helping to lead the way in this conversation from Sodexo UK and Ireland to Tesco, COOK Trading Ltd to Pret A Manger.
