Exciting news! The South Florida ClimateReady tech hub just received $19.5M in federal funding to boost coastal resilience and green jobs! The tech hub, launched last year, is the only climate tech hub in the U.S. and aims to create 23,000 green union jobs with an average salary of $83,000 over the next five years. We are proud to be represented in the steering committee of this initiative with our very own Joanne Pérodin, Senior Director of Climate Equity. “Some of the companies who are tech hub members are KINDDesigns and 1Print, which 3D prints concrete seawalls; Blue Frontier, a Boca Raton start-up that makes energy-reducing air conditioning systems; and Watsco, a Miami company that distributes energy-efficient HVAC systems that is partnering with The CLEO Institute, a grassroots advocacy group, for HVAC system training — free of cost.” This funding will support innovative projects like 3D-printed sea hives and clean concrete research, as well as engineering and construction training. The initiative is expected to generate $41 billion for the regional economy over the next decade, reinforcing Miami’s status as a leading entrepreneurial hub. Share-worthy. SFBT's third area of focus is getting plastic out of waterways. We all know how many flip flops and tennies end up in the ocean and rivers. Product biodegrades. Is it fully A-OK to degrade in an aqua environment--just in case one falls off a foot when leaping onto the fully 100% electric boat? #noplastic #shoes

Aquaculture output has exceeded wild fishery output, surging 4.4% since 2020 (according to report released by Food Administration Office (FAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations). This report focuses on how to preserve/grow that rate. Since we are making a comparision, it begs the question about how dwindling our natural sources of fish (termed wild fishery, here) are becoming. #fisheries #aquaculture #fish #oceanfarming #oceanfoods

For the first time, aquaculture output has exceeded wild fisheries, surging 4.4% since 2020 according to a report released by the FAO. To keep up with current levels of aquatic animal food consumption, it would require 36M additional tonnes or a 22% increase in the aquatic animal food supply. Generating $195 billion in 2022, the aquaculture sector faces challenges from climate change to biodiversity loss. As the world population nears 8.5 billion, the need for responsible aquaculture practices has never been more urgent. A rush to accept deep sea mining could overlook ancillary discoveries such as this: The researchers found single polymetallic nodules produced voltages of up to 0.95 V. Vesta is proud to announce the successful deployment of our Coastal Carbon Capture pilot project in Duck, North Carolina. We estimate this pilot project will remove approximately 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide after accounting for its emissions, and it will be extensively monitored by independent third parties. We are excited to advance the world's understanding of the role olivine sand can play in making coasts more resilient while addressing the root cause of climate change.

Did you know this existed? The Port of Oakland offers free harbor tours on the Blue and Gold once a month. Next one is August 16. The excursions are a great way to see how the Oakland Seaport works. Learn about the port, its operations and economics, plus jobs impact on the region. Boarding will take place at the Oakland Jack London Terminal (Ferry Dock) at 10 Clay St. (corner of Water Street) in Jack London Square, Oakland. There are nearby parking lots (fee to park.) The next online registration starts Monday, August 5 at 8 p.m. (PDT) for the August 16 tour.
