If you met me a decade ago, you remember my work in digital and partnerships with Medicaid health plans. In the context of VBC, you could say I switched sides when I moved to support those very things for health systems. A few things I've learned... 1. We're on the same team 2. Each player feels pressure to deliver 3. Each player digs in to protect what they have 4. When the stakes are high, it's someone else's fault 5. If a contentious issue makes headlines, trust has completely broken down Halle Tecco, MPH, MBA put VBC as #1 on her list of 2024 projections. Many of us have focused on clinical capabilities to improve VBC performance. That should continue. What's different in 2024 is the emergence of new financial and collaboration capabilities to improve decision-quality data and analytics and build confidence and trust in the space where we need to come together to better support patients and members.
What is value-based care (VBC) and why does it matter to digital health startups? ⚕️ VBC is a healthcare model where providers are paid based on patient health outcomes rather than the volume of services rendered. 💳 In 2021, nearly 60% of healthcare payments were tied to quality or value. 🚀 Venture dollars in value-based care startups quadrupled during the pandemic. 🔍 Studies of VBC programs so far suggest that they can reduce costs and improve quality of care, although results have often been mixed. 🦄 There’s an enormous opportunity for startups in VBC, including building enablement tools or becoming tech-enabled VBC providers themselves. Great summary and company examples from Halle Tecco, MPH, MBA MIT Hacking Medicine held our first Value Based Care Hackathon w Harvard Medical School last year to gather teams working on VBC problems and the every was great. We will do more as the space is still in early days with giant incumbents who cannot easily change their biz models and behaviors. MA plans can be good partners to VBC startups if they don’t get piloted to death before proving health and financial metrics
