Perspective.
It’s something I focus on in my Quiet Quiting presentation.
No one has the same life experience as you do, not exactly anyway. These different experiences help to shape our perspective, our world view. And our perspective can change as the world around us does.
I was out with a friend earlier this year and we stopped for gas. He was going inside to grab a snack so I asked if he minded just pumping the gas for me. I handed him my credit card and he asks “how much do you want to put in?”
“I don’t know, I just swipe the card and fill it up”
We went back and forth a bit, he didn’t understand and I couldn’t figure out why in that moment.
I ended up pumping my own gas, with him still confused on how I paid for it. Later that night I realized that he had never had the money to pay at the pump and fill the tank before. He was used to prepaying with the cashier so he could only get $20 or what ever he had to put in that week.
It then hit me, I didn’t have to think about how much that tank of gas is! I just fill it up. Sure I might complain about the rising cost, but at the end of the day, I can fill up my tank without much worry. Two years prior, I was deciding between a full tank and having lunches for work. My perspective had changed drastically, and to the point where in the moment I had trouble understanding his.
What other things do we miss in our day to day interactions with people because our perspectives are different? We are never going to be perfect at seeing another perspective 100% of the time, but imagine what a difference we can make when we put the effort in to try! Imagine how much better we can be at it when we open ourselves to having different perspectives at our table.
