A simple concept but it produced such an interesting discussion.. thank you Nicky Harverson & Chris Davis for facilitating (& Hannah Meek for asking the question that kick started all of this!) Not only did it enable us to understand each other better as colleagues whilst highlighting the diversity of experiences and backgrounds we now have in the team (which is so powerful!), it really gave us space to really think about people’s movement journey across a life course. It’s so much more than an individuals attitude or motivation… Even for us, as advocates and champions of physical activity, there are times when we’ve been less active or not active at all, for various physical, social and personal reasons, but that can change in an instance from week to week/ month to month, or for some, over a longer period of time - and that isn’t about motivation or knowledge, these are factors or conditions in our lives that make it easier or harder - the system around us - the spaces, places, infrastructure & social norms. We need to ensure that the conditions are right & the opportunities are there, ready & waiting for when an individual or group are ready to (re) engage with movement. And when they are, the expeirnces need to be positive ones; safe, inclusive & where they feel they belong.
What is our relationship with movement and physical activity throughout our lives? A question myself and Nicky Harverson asked at the team at our recent collaboration day. It didn’t come as a huge surprise to hear such diverse stories, personal journeys and experiences of change. A real opportunity for us to stop and think about what this means for our role as Active Gloucestershire, and what this means for a local movement of changemakers passionate about creating the conditions for lifelong participation. Here are the visual stories the team created which was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the rich and thought provoking conversation that sparked. Leader of a family business and a former college football coach that helps businesses build virtual universities, and individuals get 1% better everyday.
This is my squad and my why. You can definitely consider us the modern family, but the circus is what makes us. We love each other fiercely and proudly. And our opinions tend to be shared the same way. Our family isn’t easy, but we don’t want it to be. They make everyday worth living, and are the foundation of my joy and drive. What about you? #ontheball #family #purpose #personaldevelopment #professionaldevelopment

With a husband and son involved in motorsports I couldn't resist sharing this video of World Champion F1 driver Sir Jackie Stewart..... He talks about the importance of being surrounded by the "right people" and having the best #team. For Sir Jackie, who raced in the 60's and 70's when motorsport fatalities was a more common occurrence, having the best team literally meant the difference between life and death. While the stakes might not seem so high, or black and white, for the majority of us in our day to day lives today we should never underestimate the advantages of a good team. Great teams: 💡 Enhance #creativity & the ability to #solveproblems 💡 Provide a platform for #diverse #thinking 💡 Boost #morale and #motivation 💡 Improve #communication & #relationships , and build #trust 💡 Help better meet #organizationalgoals 💡 Reduce #stress and #burnout , and 💡 Improve #productivity Do you agree?

Last weekend I had the chance to watch “King Richard”, the inspiring story of how Venus and Serena Williams became the amazing tennis players we all know. It’s a clear example of determination and hard work, fostered by Richard Williams, the main character in the movie, who was literally obsessed with making his daughters the best tennis players in the world. Overall, the movie is really good, following a good rhythm, and Will Smith really nails the role of Richard Williams. There are many observations and learnings in the movie. An obvious one is the question that comes up in a lot of discussions on whether anyone can master any given discipline with the right training plan. I still think this is the case but there have to be always certain underlying conditions to achieve that excellence status (being those conditions physical, mental, etc). In this case, both girls are motivated, committed and showing hunger to get better. It’s interesting when comparing it to Andre Agassi, who also had a father acting as a coach and determined to make him number one, but following a more controversial approach and pushing Andre to the point of making him hating tennis since early infancy. And still he made to number one… The second, is the important role that a coach plays in an individual’s career. The methods used by Richard Williams were probably not approved by everyone and his decisions might have not been the most appropriate ones at certain point, but in the long run it makes a difference to have a plan, follow it through and not get distracted by other factors. As an example of this, it is remarkable (spoiler alert!) how they reject the first multi million contract that Venus is offered, convinced about the potential that she had. Definitely a must watch in this start of the year, especially if searching for some inspiration 😉 https://lnkd.in/eZ32hqpy

🎵 Is this the real life or is this just Fantasy?🎵 How Web3 Sport is blurring the lines between digital pastime and dream career ⬇ A Football Fantasy manager has been given a job as a talent scout. WILD. A manager who has honed their strategy skills from hours of playing the popular Web3 Fantasy game Sorare has landed a job as a scout in the French Football league. Beyond just fantasy sports, Blockchain backed digital ownership is providing increased incentives and opportunities for fans to get skin in the game, advance their skills and open up new career avenues. ⛵ Let's look at SailGP DAO FanOwnedTeam - the first elite Sports DAO. Fans are given the opportunity to take their fandom to the next level by becoming fractional owners of a new racing team: ➡ Learning new skills from helping govern a team. ➡ Receiving a potential return on the investment ➡ Verifiable owners of a team. This unlocks new pathways into the Sports industry for everyday fans that were not previously possible. Web3 Sport has the potential to herald a new era of democratised and rewarded participation that will allow some the opportunity to make a weekend hobby a full-time career.
From Sorare Manager to football recruiter for a Ligue 1 team 🤯 What a journey for Alexy Durand , one of our most active Manager from the 🇫🇷 community. The life trajectories we’ve seen over the past couple of years are truly insane. They all paint the same story of a movement that bridges our digital and physical lives to nurture our passion for sports. Our mission at Sorare is to enable every sport fan to become a team owner. Play all the fun roles that come with team ownership: scout players, buy/sell, coach, win! Now some of our Managers work for real world teams. My three sons all support Scottish Rugby. And after this weekend’s result against the French, that is a commitment anyone would start to question. Why follow a team that manages to regularly grab defeat from the jaws of victory? Why endure the heartache of watching a golden generation of players fail in every major competition? Why do all referees seem to have a vendetta against us (I’m talking about you Craig Joubert)? Why do all of that, especially given that all three were born and raised in England? Group identity is a powerful emotion. That feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself. That shared sense of belonging and commitment that group members have towards each other and the group as a whole. It can unify you in the depths of shared despair, give you courage to fight together or the resilience band together to keep going. Strangers are instant compatriots, united against a common threat. A positive shared identity can be the keystone of inclusion, collaboration and trust. Which raises the question - why do so may organisations ignore it? Sure – many will reference their organisational purpose as the source of their unity. Which is true – up to a point. But if purpose is ‘our why’, then identity is ‘our who’. A solid, clear sense of organisational self would seem to be a necessary first step on the road to defining your contribution to the world around us. Without it, it’s much harder to recognise and leverage the collective strengths and capabilities needed to keep going in the face of adversity. Just ask my sons, who’ve already learnt that stoicism, resilience and a good sense of humour are essential attributes for supporting Scotland. What is your organisational identity and how does it make your teams stronger?
