The High School High Tech (HSHT) program at ServiceSource Florida is kicking off another summer helping students prepare for careers in the medical field. In 2023, two high school students from Pasco County attended the University of South Florida Nursing Summer Scholars Program through a partnership with ServiceSource Florida. Their introduction to nursing as a profession made quite an impact: Both students graduated high school in May and have applied to nursing school. Over the past four years, HSHT programs have supported more than 100 students with tours of colleges and universities, internships in the nursing/medical field, and sponsoring students studying first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) to receive their CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification. These opportunities help bring more young adults into the nursing and medical fields and aid communities facing critical shortages of healthcare workers.

The best thing about being in the ER as a 16-year-old is being able to see and experience things that not many 16-year-olds get to see and experience. Interning in the Emergency Room is preparing me for my career ahead and I'm getting a jumpstart on the way hospitals run, how doctors and nurses communicate, and getting a look on how clinical rotations may be while in nursing school. Being in the ER is a big responsibility...hence why you don't see many teenagers interning or volunteering in that department. You have to be able to handle stress during high chaos hours while not getting overwhelmed by your responsibilities. https://lnkd.in/gCV43Yup

The power of apprenticeships
'I desperately wanted to become a nurse but, having two very young children, I thought I’d have to wait until they were older to pursue my dream career. The apprenticeships were the perfect opportunity to make my dream come true.' Grace started her journey with the NHS in an administrative role, working closely with district nurses. However, her heart was always set on becoming a mental health nurse. Through the support of NHS apprenticeship programmes, Grace was able to achieve her dream career. She successfully completed both the Trainee Nurse Associate and Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeships. The flexibility of apprenticeships, coupled with working and earning a wage while studying, made this journey feasible for Grace. 'Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust have gone above and beyond to make it possible for me to complete the apprenticeship. My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship is, take the opportunity while it’s available. You never know where you might end up until you try.' We are actively seeking referrals for an apprenticeship grant focusing on these healthcare occupations: Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, Medical Lab Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Health Information Technology, Radiologic Technician, and Physical Therapy Assistant. For employers of these occupations, SWIC will pay from $4,000 for the one-semester Pharmacy Technician up to $16,000 for degree programs. The only requirement is hiring SWIC students into registered apprenticeships. For students and prospective students in these programs, the apprenticeship can provide assistance with tuition and other training costs, and funds are available to help with life's barriers, like transportation costs, rent and utility assistance, child care costs, and more. There is no apprenticeship without a willing employer. This grant is designed to incentivize employers in non-traditional apprenticeship occupations to try out the concept as a workforce attraction and development tool.
