CIOs are in a critical seat at the exec table as IT execution is increasingly tied to a company’s bottom line. Long gone are the days of “keeping the lights on,” as today’s CIOs are expected to manage an ever-expanding portfolio of platforms, tools, and solutions, while also being tasked with rapidly grasping and integrating new technologies like GenAI. Sapphire Ventures is doubling down on our CIO community by rolling out our regional CIO Series - peer-to-peer events in various cities. Coupled with our CIO community, we aim to help CIOs engage with each other on relevant topics, surface tribal knowledge, and navigate emerging trends. I had the pleasure of kicking off our first CIO Series last month in the Bay Area. We spent the evening discussing, you guessed it, GenAI. We covered a lot of ground discussing topics ranging from security/governance to data readiness and workforce enablement. Although many industries were represented in the room, it was interesting to hear common themes emerge throughout the night. Sharing a few key takeaways below: 1.) Reevaluating internal processes before harnessing new solutions → The recent GenAI craze has put pressure on IT teams to move quickly in order to harness its potential value. But there are some fundamental IT themes (e.g. data hygiene, preventing leakage) as well as yet-to-be-established legal precedence that are slowing down adoption. CIOs are spending a lot of energy to evaluate which use cases and existing processes can actually benefit from automation. 2.) Incumbents vs new GenAI entrants → CIOs are still waiting to understand how existing system investments will bring GenAI functionality to bear. With most incumbents being early in their offerings, there’s been an opportunity for IT leaders to get familiar with new vendors in the space. There is a lot of excitement around next-gen AI tools, but incumbents have a strong distribution advantage and also house the data and context required to power GenAI solutions. Although the everyone in the group are exploring and engaging with new vendors, there was hesitancy to proceed with long-term commitments as strategies and the ecosystem mature. 3.) Security & data governance continue to be top of mind → The majority of CIOs in attendance have set initial guidelines and guardrails to allow their teams to trial GenAI solutions, but everyone is still understanding their blind spots. We also heard that as more organizations experiment with building customer-facing GenAI capabilities, there are a number of new security and data concerns that teams are uncovering, and the lack of reference architecture is mounting a real challenge to those efforts.   Thank you again to all who participated in our Bay Area CIO Series!
