Many people ask me who will win the European Championship 2024.When i said 2018 and 2022 that Croatia is one of 3 top favorite teams,even my close friend was joking with me.Same as i said after first game of Marocco,that this team is hungry enough to win a 🏅first time in history of african football. Yesterday i saw Portugal vs Croatia. For me the 2 main candidates.Both teams,with arround 20 equal top players but still with a team menthality.The main reason why i choose this 2 nations,that both teams have also several game changer,who can decide a game even if the team dont perform. As third candidate i want to add Denmark.A team with the best physical stuff of all teams.A team with high running performance and team spirit.Also their corners and free kicks are on highest level. The worst display of any Italian 🇮🇹 ⚽️ team at a major tournament? “Tutto da rifare”, screams La Gazzetta dello Sport. Everything needs rebuilding. Maybe a little dramatic, but this wasn’t pretty. “Embarrassing and humiliated”, it states on the front page of this major Italian sports daily, after the 0-2 loss to Switzerland in the last 16 of Euro 2024. Berlin’s Olympiastadion is where Italy lifted the World Cup in 2006, and won Olympic gold in 1936. A special place, also in defeat it would seem, as this must signal the start of a new era. Italy is lacking in (too) many departments. It was evident throughout the group stage and hammered home by the Swiss. After missing the last two World Cups, this adds to a pile of recent misery. Some say this group is in transition. Then again, we’ve seen consistent decline over 10 years or so, and the manner of this defeat may just prove a tipping point. Even though Italy won Euro 2020, I think it’s correct to reset and establish new goals that go well beyond the immediacy of the coming years or the 2026 World Cup. Needs a longer term strategy. What should follow now is a period of deep introspection, a rebalancing act that goes to the heart of grassroots football, player development, and the elite pathway. Serie A might even play a bigger role but clubs are probably more focused on business interests rather than helping to develop a world class generation that makes Italy proud. In the end, it all boils down to player development, which clubs in Italy could be incentivised to support in my view, finding creative ways to filter the very best and help them reach the top, whether that’s with clubs at home or abroad. We’ll never know… To revive Italian football, we need Italian players. There are plenty in the lower leagues. When I was playing, only foreign players who were truly exceptional made it to Serie A. Of course, there were exceptions, but that’s part of the game. I would love to see youth academies being valued, as has been happening for years in Germany and Spain. Only then will we return to great levels. Clubs need to wake up, including the big teams. That led to us at Sports Business Institute Barcelona to do a quick analysis on the possible increase in revenue on promotions Taking the revenues of top teams away from each league, we find an average. That, essentially, would be the estimated jump from the average revenue of second tier league (by the way, top teams contribute an astonishing share of club total revenues.
