Disrupting the Status Quo Since 1982 | A Phoenix Rising Since 2019 | Survivorship Expert | Innovative Nurse Leader
While I appreciate a few points in this review, it misses so many marks. I agree change is much-needed in our insurance system, and I know most would agree. I also agree we should have "basic coverage" for everyone without any complicated sign-ups. I worry, however, that a plan like this where people can "buy up" (like life insurance, I assume) would only serve to perpetuate the rampant division of social classes in the US. I would like to know who would determine what constitutes as "basic coverage" and "higher level" medical care? Would it be based on data that we already know is biased toward those involved in the bulk of medical studies (cis-het white men)? This seems like it could easily become more like a dystopian primer than a great "new vision." After all, as the author matter-of-factly states, "We have inequality in all aspects of our lives, and this is another." In a world, and a sector, where we are ardently trying to improve equity, a plan where people can choose who gets what care based on a standard would set us back even further. I'm happy people are working on finding a solution to our healthcare inefficiencies, but based on this review, this particular plan isn't it.
A new vision for US health care
