Happy #WorldWetlandsDay! 🌍🦆 I had the privilege of visiting Wetland Putrajaya, Malaysia as part of a Heritage Conservation subject at Master of Environment in University of Putra Malaysia (UPM). Dr. Mohd Yusoff Ishak passionately explained the significance of wetland conservation and why it's a crucial heritage of Malaysia. Wetlands are more than just scenic landscapes; they play vital roles in biodiversity, water filtration, flood control, and climate regulation. Conserving wetlands isn't just about preserving natural beauty; it's about safeguarding our environment, protecting wildlife habitats, and ensuring sustainable water management. Singapore Closes Sentosa Beaches After Oil Spill from Vessel Collision Singapore has closed the beaches on Sentosa, a popular resort island and a haven for wealthy expatriates, following an oil spill caused by a vessel collision at a nearby port. The incident occurred when one vessel collided with another, resulting in a significant discharge of oil into the surrounding waters. Authorities responded swiftly to contain the spill, deploying booms and skimmers to limit the spread of the oil. Environmental agencies have been working around the clock to assess the damage and initiate clean-up operations. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is leading the response effort, coordinating with local environmental groups and international experts to mitigate the impact on marine life and coastal ecosystems. Sentosa Island, known for its pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and vibrant tourist attractions, has been temporarily closed to ensure public safety and facilitate clean-up operations. Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid the affected areas until further notice. The closure of Sentosa’s beaches is expected to have a significant impact on local businesses and the tourism industry, which relies heavily on the island’s appeal as a tropical getaway. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision and will be conducting a thorough review to prevent future incidents. In the meantime, they are focused on minimizing the environmental impact and restoring the affected areas to their natural state. Indonesia faces a complex challenge, balancing developmental pursuits with peatland restoration. But by amplifying community voices and aligning local interests, a sustainable future for its precious peatlands is realistically within reach. I wrote this as a reflection on World Wetlands Day, which has the theme "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing". A very important theme that reflects our challenges to restore peatlands in Indonesia.

🌍 Peatlands are like sponges, soaking up and storing vast amounts of carbon Although covering just a small fraction of our planet's surface - 0.3% to be exact - the wet peatlands areas hold significant value that deserves our consideration and protection. This ecosystem stores over 500-600 gigatons of #carbon, second only to oceans. Tropical peat swamp forests in Southeast Asia are home to numerous endangered species, this includes: 🐘 Pygmy (Borneo) Elephants 🐻 Sun Bears 🦧 Orangutans Countless species also consider the British #peatlands their home, such as: 🦅 Hen Harriers 🦌 Red Deer 🐇 Mountain Hares The Peatland Protection & Restoration project in Sumatra, Merang, is reviving, safeguarding and rehydrating 22,900 hectares of peatland rainforest in Indonesia. In addressing water challenges in Bali, Kopernik is supporting the Bali Watershed Management Coordination Forum (FORDAS Bali) to coordinate water preservation efforts among various stakeholders, aiming for integrated watershed management on the island. This initiative targets critical lands in the midstream to upstream areas of the Ayung watershed, one of Bali's major water sources spanning five regencies and one city. These areas are often compromised due to factors such as excessive groundwater extraction, reduced water reserves, and water and soil contamination. To sustain these efforts, we have implemented a Payment For Environmental Services (PES) system, compensating individuals or organizations for the environmental services they provide. We are inviting business owners or individuals to pledge in and support the initiative. Your participation is crucial in making a meaningful impact on water conservation efforts in Bali. How they are functioning the peatlands ecosystems benefiting economically, socially, and enviromentally. How they conserve the landscape of peatlands, prevent and control the land fire frequently happening.

🚨 Today, we would like to draw your #attention to a sore #environmental problem that requires immediate action, for which we managed to take measures - the presence of discarded tires on one of the beautiful beaches of Nessebar. As concerned citizens, it is our #responsibility to preserve the natural beauty of our coastal areas and ensure a healthy environment for both current and future generations. 🏖Today - 06.02.2023 the shores of Nessebar were marred by the ugly sight of discarded tires, posing a threat to the delicate marine ecosystem and the overall well-being of our #community. These #abandoned tires not only disturb the scenic #nature that attracts tourists and locals alike, but also pose a serious environmental hazard. 🌱 The environmental impact of discarded tires is far-reaching. They can release harmful chemicals and toxins into the surrounding soil and water, endangering #marinelife and disrupting the delicate balance of our #ecosystem. In addition, visual #pollution affects the tourism industry, which is an important part of our local economy. 👥 Today, local citizens have already organized themselves to clean up these discarded tires from our favorite beaches. They have already taken action and organized a public event on 07.02.2023. on the respective beach. Our question is, why should the local citizens with their own transport and efforts take up this initiative, why did the local municipality not undertake to organize its own initiative for their removal?
