52 Pickup for “picking up” dialects – Installment 48/52 - Multiple endings: let’s take a look at some fun common word endings and how they’re handled. • Multisyllabic words ending in -ow (pronounced with long-O and in which the syllable is unstressed): - In many US Southern dialects, these sounds are replaced with “ah” (or it could be considered an “ə”): “windah”, “fellah”, “hollah” - Appalachian uses an “er”: “winder”, “feller”, “holler” • Words ending in -ary, -ory, -ury: - In many UK dialects, these will be reduced to one syllable: “diction’ree”, “la-bor-a-t’ree”, “Cantah-b’ree” • Words ending in -ile: - In GenAm, these words are pronounced with a one-syllable “əl” (like on the end of “little”): “mobəl*, “fyoodəl”, “hosdəl” - In RP, these words are pronounced with a two-syllable ending mimicking/rhyming with “dial”: “mo-bye-əl”*, “fyoo-tie-əl”, “hos-tie-əl” - In Cockney, these words would follow the RP model yet the terminal “əl” becomes “oo”: “mo-bye-oo”*, “fyoo-tie-oo”, “‘oss-tie-oo” (* The “mo” of “mobile” is subtly different in GenAm, RP and Cockney but that’s a discussion for another day.) 3 conversations I've had with customers this year that I still think about a lot: 1. The person who told me "I don't have a first name" when I was getting info for their account. After learning a little more, I suspect this isn't the first time I talked to someone w/o a given name - but they actually told me when I asked. It opened my eyes to how much tech I use every day that's built with *only* Western traditions in mind. 2. Someone who had just gotten out of prison after several decades and was released into a completely unfamiliar technological landscape. He had a smart phone and little knowledge of how to use it. I think about how much we take technical literacy for granted. 3. A d/Deaf mom using live captioning. I don't know what tech she was using and wish I'd asked. It was significantly faster than a call with an ASL interpreter on the line (I am personally always happy to take more time with interpreters/translators - and from a business standpoint call handling time is still important). I've also heard from a regional organization that provides interpreter services that they've been struggling to meet demand and this was the first/only time I had someone use tech for this.
