Circular Economy and the Arts Sustainability is a buzzword often discussed today. But have you ever heard of an artwork made from car bonnets? In a collaboration between Art Pharmacy Charter Hall, Cox Architecture and Armitage Jones, five significant artworks were commissioned for 555 Collins Street in Melbourne's CBD. These artworks, ranging from sculpture and textile to digital art, transformed the newly developed site into a reflection of Melbourne's vibrant culture and its emerging lifestyle precinct, Midtown. One of the curated pieces was a feature ceiling installation by local Melbourne designer and artist Jonathan Ben-Tovim. It was a new iteration of his iconic “Crash Series” that transforms car bonnets recovered from car wreckages into lighting installations. Ben-Tovim's experimental lighting and furniture design practice, based in the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne, explores the intricacies of the global industrial economy. His designs aim to question materials, processes, and supply chains implicated in delivering commercially mass-produced goods to uncover counter-narratives. Jonathan Ben-Tovim’s Cloud Vortex, showcased at 555 Collins Street, takes inspiration from nature and Melbourne's often windy and blustering weather. It is a surreal vortex of repurposed car bonnets arranged dynamically to create different compositions depending on the viewing angle. From the ground floor looking directly up, the work appears like a flat spiral, while from an elevated perspective, the three-dimensional space forms a Cloud Vortex that takes flight. An increasing interest in sustainable and circular art emphasises the critical role art plays in promoting sustainability and changing perceptions of waste. Artists who incorporate circular economy concepts into their creations inspire individuals and communities to envision a more environmentally friendly future. "In various regions of the planet, nature imposes adverse conditions on the human body. In these places, designing a building is almost like creating a garment: an artifact that protects and offers comfort. This challenge requires technological performance that must be combined with aesthetics. Making human beings feel good involves more than just meeting notions of comfort and safety; it's also a question of working with spaces in their symbolic and perceptual dimensions." https://lnkd.in/gfx5xTcG

🌲🚗 Volvo's New Triumph: "World of Volvo" Opens Doors to the World! 😍Volvo has unveiled its new marvel, the "World of Volvo," a vast 22,000-square-metre facility constructed from 2800 tons of timber, marking a significant shift towards sustainable building practices in the automotive industry. Situated as a museum, an overseas delivery centre, and a venue for TED talks, this space reflects Volvo’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. 🔍 Key Insights: 1️⃣ Sustainable Construction: The structure, predominantly made of glulam beams and cross-laminated timber boards, showcases one of Europe's most impressive timber constructions, designed by the renowned Henning Larsen architects. Using timber emphasises sustainability and leverages the material's natural properties to create a unique aesthetic and functional space. 2️⃣ Symbolic Opening Date: Chosen for its historical significance, the opening date commemorates the anniversary of Volvo's first vehicle production. This ties the new facility's launch to the company's long heritage of automotive excellence. 3️⃣ Innovative Design and Purpose: Beyond serving as a museum, the "World of Volvo" integrates multiple functions, including a new restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Stefan Karlsson. Its design directly connects with nature, resonating with the Scandinavian ethos of openness and environmental harmony. 🗣️ #questionforgroup: With companies like Volvo embracing massive timber for large-scale projects, how might this influence sustainability trends in other industries? 💬 Let’s discuss the potential of mass timber in redefining corporate architecture and how sustainable materials can be integrated into various industry projects. 📈Share your thoughts on how Volvo’s initiative might inspire other companies to adopt greener building technologies. 🔗 For an in-depth look at Volvo’s new facility and its impact on both the company and sustainable building practices, read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gkU5zrCT #volvo #sustainability #architecture #architectureanddesign #masstimber #tmasstimberconstruction #innovation #cars #greenbuilding #museum #tedtalks #sweden #timber #engineering #woodcentral #woodcentralau1 #offsitecentral #woodsolutions #timberengineering

Charlton Workstack has been named in The Guardian’s Best Architecture of 2023! 👏 Oliver Wainwright, The Guardian’s Architecture and Design critic, has named Charlton Workstack amongst the top five best structures worldwide in 2023: “As space for manufacturing is pushed ever further out of our cities, or obliterated altogether, dRMM’s ingenious project in Charlton, south-east London, shows how workshops and studios can be cleverly piled high on a tight site. Built from cross-laminated timber, the structure steps out as it rises, providing bigger studios at the lighter upper levels, fitting more floor area on a small footprint, and creating a striking roadside beacon – trumpeting that manufacturing is here to stay. Housing furniture-makers, clothing producers and an electric bike workshop, it proves to developers that a “mixed use” development can mean more than coffee shops and yoga studios.” B&K Structures were proud to deliver the structural frame for Charlton Workstack, including the cross laminated timber wall and floor slabs and structural steelwork podiums. Well done to all involved 👏 F Parkinson Ltd Greenwich Enterprise Board dRMM Arup Stora Enso You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eC24UMw2 #crosslaminatedtimber #CLT #construction #sustainablebuilding #sustainability #sustainableconstruction #timberconstruction #masstimber #engineeredtimber #offsitesolutions
