It’s not easy nowadays to find an issue #Republicans and #Democrats agree on, but here is one: The US Congress must pass a federal privacy law. In the United States, we lack a comprehensive federal privacy law, so states have taken the lead in each crafting their own rules. This imposes incredible burdens and costs on businesses and is ultimately bad for consumers. A federal privacy law would provide clarity and consistency, simplifying compliance and ensuring that businesses and #American consumers are playing by one unified set of rules. #privacy

Yes. A U.S. federal privacy law (and importantly, one which preempts existing state laws under most circumstances) would harmonize American privacy regulation, provide clarity for businesses, create privacy rights for citizens, and improve American foreign relations and trade. These are things everyone should be able to get behind. #privacy

IAPP News Editor Joe Duball reports on HB 15's expected impact and how Kentucky's competing bills embody the ongoing stakeholder debate over a preferred state privacy framework. This spring has been busy for the US Privacy landscape between the new state privacy bills (and laws) and the US House E&C holding a hearing on the proposed American Privacy Rights Act draft (along with a cornucopia of child related privacy proposals.) The FTC proposed updates to COPPA recently (January) moving the ball forward on the 2022 law, and the first amendment continues front and center in the discussion of kids privacy laws with recent SCOTUS oral arguments. While much of the press has been focused on the APRA, reading some of the reports and transcripts of the April 17th hearings, it seems more likely that any APRA version enacted (and that’s an IF) is unlikely to be a panacea and rather another entry in the fray of fractured privacy law in the US. #Privacy https://lnkd.in/g_KghAhy
