It took me 4 rejections and 7 years to get an offer from Meta. Here’s what I did to finally get that offer 👇🏽 1️⃣ I developed product sense and understood the value of Data in a Product team. ↳ I found opportunities to work with Product Managers at my job. I learned about what they do and how they think about Product. ↳ I studied for Product Manager interviews, even though I wanted to be a Data Scientist. This allow me to develop my Product understanding. 2️⃣ I became so comfortable with SQL, I could do it with my eyes closed. ↳ I was constantly working on leveling up in SQL. I tried solving the same problems with different approaches and compared my approaches. ↳ I invested in understanding databases and database design. 3️⃣ I worked on projects that demonstrated leadership and initiative. ↳ At work, I found gaps where I could step up and take on a leadership role. 'Better to be a plumber than a programmer this day and age!' This is what Chris Wood, Global Equity Strategist at Jefferies commented, when asked if AI would take away jobs from programmers in the next five years. Is it really happening? In the past few years, we have seen some crazy layoffs at mega tech companies like Meta and Google, among many more. I understand that basic level coding or even complex level of coding can be easily done by non-coders with the help of AI. Even the routine work flows everywhere are getting automated. However, on the other end, people continuously gaining AI-ML skills should be highly valuable and should not be concerned about AI taking their jobs.
