The job market for stress and design engineers in the UK's aerospace sector is both challenging and rewarding, with the industry currently standing at a critical junction. The sector is balancing the push towards innovation—like the development of eVTOLs and sustainable aviation technologies—with the economic pressures induced by recent global events. On one hand, the demand for stress and design engineers has been sustained by the aerospace industry's long-term growth trajectory and the continuous need for modernized aircraft designs and increased production rates. The UK, with its rich aviation history and presence of major players like BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, and GKN Aerospace, remains a hub for aerospace engineering talent. The skillset for stress engineers, traditionally centered on classical hand analysis and metallic structures, has expanded to include proficiency in FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and a deep understanding of composite materials. Similarly, design engineers are now expected to have a grasp of the latest CAD (Computer-Aided Design) tools and an appreciation for manufacturing constraints in both metal and composite components. However, Brexit has introduced a level of uncertainty, particularly around skilled worker mobility and access to the European supply chain. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a profound impact, causing a temporary downturn in demand for commercial aircraft. Yet, this has led to an increased focus on innovation as companies look to rebound and capture emerging markets, including urban air mobility and unmanned aerial vehicles. The UK government's commitment to the Aerospace Growth Partnership and funding for aerospace R&D is a positive signal for job seekers. Moreover, the shift towards greener technologies, as seen with the UK’s Jet Zero Council, is creating new roles and requiring new expertise. The introduction of remote working practices in the wake of the pandemic has opened new opportunities for flexible working arrangements, which may broaden the talent pool. However, it may also increase competition as geographical barriers diminish. Overall, for stress and design engineers in the UK's aerospace industry, the landscape is one of opportunity amid adaptation. Candidates with a passion for innovation, sustainability, and the versatility to navigate a post-Brexit, post-pandemic world are likely to find a plethora of opportunities to advance their careers in this dynamic field.

One cannot become a good engineer just by operating some software tool(s) and probably no software designs or analyze things on its own. CAD Engineer and Structural Design Engineer are not the same titles. A structural design engineer is a creative person who always thinks to create a new design/make the existing design better. To do that, now a day he/she often uses software tool(s) to analyze/model/draw which will be accurate, faster, and more communicative with the reduced life-cycle time. In the design of aerostructures components/ assembly, the role of selecting suitable geometry and selection of materials plays a critical role and is the primary responsibility of an aircraft structural design engineer. He/She must be involved in the process of determining suitable member sizes & shapes based on the basic understanding of loading on the component/ assy., design options, materials including fabrication techniques, weight, cost, in-service performance, maintainability, and disposal methods. We are happy to inform you that all our programs included the topic selection of suitable geometry for both metallic & composite designs. #Reviews: 👉 https://g.co/kgs/csvXMp Stay connected with a School of Industry Oriented Engineering and Solutions, for valuable #mentorship programs. #aerospace #mechanical #coredesign #materials #metallicmaterial #aircraft #aerostructures #aerospace #composites #handcalcualtions #stressanalysis #design #repair #aerostructures #projects #msabroad

Lady Racer provides simple yet elegant engineering solution to save the day. Most would know that during the Battle of Britain and later, the Rolls Royce Merlin engine provided the power for both the Spitfire as well as the Hurricane fighter aircraft that fought the German Messerschmitt Bf109 for control of the skies. The 109 was fairly evenly matched against the Spitfire. The experience and quality of the pilot usually the determining factor, ( despite what the Fanboys on either side will tell you ). One area that gave a clear advantage to the 109 was that its DB 601 engine used Bosch Direct Fuel Injection versus the British aircraft engines carburation. German pilots quickly found out that they could push the stick forward and enter a negative G dive however the British planes could not. Enter Beatrice “Tilly” Shilling. Tilly, an aeronautical engineer, realised that the problem was to do with the fuel line gear pumps, which would pressure surge if the SU carburettor float needle 'locked shut' and, subsequently, fuel was forced from the top to bottom of the SU carburettor as the g forces changed. Thus two immediate problems occurred - a weak cut (from negative g causing fuel to rise in the carburettor thus starving the jets) and a fuel surge (as negative g changed to positive g) swamping the engine as the g forces varied and the float opened the jets to maximum. The immediate answer, Tilly reasoned, was a 'restrictor'. This was a small disc, (about 12.5mm), which had a small hole (orifice) drilled into it. This was fitted to the carburettor fuel line and created enough of a pressure gradient to limit the surge effect of the pumps in a dive as well as permitting maximum power. The device could be added quickly and easily, without removing the planes from service. Officially, the device became known as the “RAE Restrictor,” but as Tilly toured RAF bases to oversee the installation of the device, aircrews had other ideas. “Miss Shilling’s Orifice” became the new name of the life-saving brass disc. From a young age, Tilly had been determined to become an engineer, and after school gained a job with an electrical engineering company run by business pioneer Margaret Partridge, where she learnt how to install electrical wiring and generators. Later she attended Manchester University, emerging with an MSc in Mech Eng. In 1936 she was hired by the Royal Aircraft Establishment, where she remained until her retirement in 1969. Post War she continued with research before moving to the Mech Eng. department, where she worked on projects such as the Blue Streak missile, wet runway effect on braking, supersonic aircraft and rocket propulsion. However Tilly was so much more. For one thing she raced motorcycles and cars winning many awards. There is a Pub in Farnborough, UK – ‘The Tilly Shilling’. I for one feel a need to have a Pint here and raise a glass in her honour #rollsroyce #defence #business #ausa #manufacturing #lean #work
