You know, it's one thing to understand the theory, to know the equations and concepts. It's another to put it to practice. The internship has been like the kiln to mould aspiring innovators into proper engineers. By employing the engineering design process, we learn how engineers and makers before us make the machines and devices we have grown so accustomed to in various areas of our lives. And I have to say, it's a lot more intensive than I thought. - Having to switch caps from engineers to scientists to researchers to mathematicians, - Relating with peers from other engineering and related backgrounds, - Having pieces of the puzzle in your head that only form the full picture when you all come together and apply yourselves. ... Those have been some of the best parts of this experience so far. And right here, is the group that's making things happen. Allow me to introduce team FlowMetrics: Deepak Narayan, Olorundara Akojede, Brandon Bravo and of course, yours truly! And I can't wait to share what we've been working so hard on at the end of the internship! Again, the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen - Rice University is where magic happens or at the very least you'll see the magic smokes from the attempts...

During my master’s thesis internship at Robeco, I studied the use of variance-covariance (VCV) matrix estimation for risk-based portfolio optimization. Afterwards, together with my former internship supervisors Clint Howard, Harald Lohre, and Maarten Jansen, we continued to develop this work into a paper. I am happy to share that our paper is now available to read on SSRN: https://lnkd.in/ez7D_Rug. Our main findings are: 1. When validating more novel and complex VCVs on the standard GMV portfolio, they indeed achieve substantial volatility reductions. 2. However, when moving to more practical portfolios (such as a constrained long-only portfolio), the opportunity set for these alternative VCV estimators is considerably smaller. 🌿 Reflecting on a Fulfilling Summer 🌞🔬 Hello everyone! I hope you're having an awesome summer. I just had to share the incredible experience I had interning at the DCo's Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant, thanks to the Durham County Government's LEEP Program. During my time here, I had the chance to work with different departments and let me tell you, it was a journey of surprises and growth. We thought I'd find myself working with the finance and administrative department? Certainly not me! Yet, this unexpected exposure taught me valuable skills that I'm eager to apply not only to my school's  Future Business Leaders of America, Inc. (FBLA)  chapter but also to my future entrepreneurial ventures. Working with the plant operators and lab analysts, getting hands-on experience was an absolute blast. I've always had a thing for the medical field, technology, and nature. This experience showed me how we can bridge the gap between health and the environment, through Environmental Engineering. Another thing that really stood out to me was the Nitrification and Denitrification🌀 process of the plant's water purification process. The idea of breaking down chemicals naturally without polluting the air was really shocking. The idea that we can tackle climate change issues by mimicking natural processes is so cool. This internship has restored my faith in humanity's capacity to tackle environmental challenges head-on. But it wasn't all about work—this summer gave me so much more. From creating connections with like-minded peers to rubbing shoulders with intellectual minds at DCo. I've come out of this experience with a network and a mindset that'll serve me well in my journey. A heartfelt thank you to DCo for granting me this opportunity. This isn't just a line on my resume; it's a chapter in my story that's left an indelible mark. Notably, our technology can identify various non-ferrous materials and has the potential for in-line use in industrial processes. We strongly believe in the power of collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Recently, Michiel Poppink attended the Internship Fair at Hogeschool Utrecht to connect with the next generation. We're actively building an open flow of knowledge and provide opportunities for research. We extend an invitation to students to join us on both the technological and marketing front. International business students, in particular, can play a vital role in launching this groundbreaking technology while gaining valuable experience in the field of metal recycling. The Internship Fair was a fantastic platform for us to engage with enthusiastic and passionate students and teachers. We had meaningful conversations about sharing industry insights with the next generation, among whom our former intern Andreea Sabau. ROI: Interns make life richer whether hosting on your team, pairing up to companies or launching platforms that connect students with "micro" and "summer" work opportunities. Simply, it just feels great to do for this next generation. Over the last few days, the ROI (Return On Internships) has been awesome to witness for our VCET team and broader community. These little gems include: An intern from 25 years ago reached out after being CTO or CPO at several leading global tech firms seeking help in starting their own next *BIG* thing. VCET's two summer associates from Middlebury and University of Washington are now in the house and crushing it. An MBA Fellow from 16 years ago asked for career advice and within 48 hours was speaking with the CEO of the company of "his dreams". One MA based intern who had been paired with two Vermont hardware companies over last two summers started ** today ** in a full time engineering role at one of these. #boom UVM ARC students are in-the-house once again making IP into a business. Middlebury College Innovation Hub Summer Program kicked off Widewail offices in Hula. This programs places interns all over Burlington area. Two McGill engineering students from Northern VT are making the next generation of solar cells and working on underwater robots! And on and on, these stories go.
