In today’s #MilkMinute, Bertus van Heerden (Chief Economist, MPO) takes a look at both international and local farmgate prices. - Average European farmgate price for March 2024, R9,25/ litre. - New Zealand farmgate price, R6,58/litre - slightly down since February 2024. New Zealand is currently exporting more than 90% of dairy produce, while there is a ‘town-supply price’, which deals with domestic supply. According to Bertus, this is realistically what the South African farmgate price should be compared to. - Import parity price for March 2024, R9,74/litre - slightly down from R10,08 in February 2024 due to slightly lower price for skimmed milk powder (SMP) and butter on an international level. - The SA farmgate price, R7,88/litre - 6% up from the previous year. PROTECTING THE SUPPLY CHAIN Since mid-2023, prices of domestic and exported agricultural products like rice and coffee have surged. By the first four months of 2024, according to Nhan Dan Newspaper, Vietnam's average export rice price reached 644 USD/ton, up 22.2%, and coffee was 3,402 USD/ton, up 49.7% from the same period in 2023. The market experienced a sharp decrease in supply, leading to concerns about supply chain disruptions. Additionally, the cancellation of contracts and breaking links in buying and selling agricultural products are still happening regularly. This underscores the urgent need to protect the agricultural supply chain for transparent and sustainable industry growth. This requires a transformation from psychology to the action of both producers and businesses.
