The Politics of #Diplomacy: How the United States Builds Multilateral Military Coalitions by Marina E. Henke How does the United States build #multilateral #military #coalitions? Conventional wisdom focuses on the role of formal #alliance structures. #Allies band together because they share threat perceptions, political ideology, norms, and values. I argue instead that US-led coalition-building efforts are influenced by the entirety of bilateral and multilateral ties that connects the United States with a third party. The breadth of institutions matters because it allows officials to gather information on the potential coalition partner’s deployment preferences beyond straightforward security considerations—such as what kind of economic and political considerations affect its willingness to join the coalition. Diplomatic embeddedness also helps American officials identify linkages between military and non-military interests. ... https://lnkd.in/e_E2vg6H

There is clear evidence that US efforts to build a coalition of allies in our region is directed at containing Chinese power and developing the capability to eventually confront the Chinese military. That scenario is a nightmare for Australia. We now find certain elements of a Labor government flirting with containment and confrontation with China - instead of openly seeking to secure peace and prosperity through dialogue and diplomacy. It would be a major mistake for Labor to join the Coalition in goading and provoking our greatest trading partner and the primary source of our prosperity. That is why we have joined with former Labor Foreign Ministers Bob Carr and Gareth Evans in drafting the Détente Statement. By: Adrian Pisarski and Kym Davey https://lnkd.in/dH-ezpAG

When the Soviet Union initiated construction on the Berlin Wall, do you know how JFK responded? According to Robert Zoellick’s “America in the World: A History of U.S. Diplomacy and Foreign Policy,” JFK purposely went sailing to “signal calm to downplay the thoughts of imminent war.” JFK followed up his hobby with a mild statement, one that “he did not rush back to the White House to make…” Influence comes in many forms. It’s not just statements made from a podium, leaflet drops, or the deployment of a ship, forces, or aid to a specific region. Sometimes the the most effective message comes from deliberate inaction. In the current information environment, would JFK’s actions have been effective? Or would they be swallowed up by one side of the media or the other to fill a 24-hour news cycle? What do you think? #influence #informationoperations #psyop #miso #internationalrelations ##strategiccommunication #nextlevelinfluence

A Warning for Modern Imperialists: In the complex presence of Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, we must heed the warnings written in the annals of history. Military aggression and territorial expansion, fuelled by the desire for national pride and dominance, have led to chaos and conflict in the past. In the age of global interdependence, such actions impact far beyond borders. Let us learn from the past to build a future based on diplomacy, cooperation and the collective wisdom that "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it". Chairman and Co-Founder, Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue; former U.S. Under Secretary of State; 2022 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee
There are no limits to the CCP’s exploitation of Chinese companies to serve its malign interests. As Romanians know very well, there is no distinction between what’s public and what’s private in a communist system. Chinese companies like Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, and others may appear like typical private businesses but they are, in fact, weapons of a Chinese communist regime that’s even more dangerous than the Soviet Union. Chinese 5G suppliers, like Lenovo, are weaponized by the CCP and should be banned.
"Romanians rejected the Soviet brand of communism along with its invasive surveillance apparatus. You know better than to trust another communist regime with access to your most sensitive information and should reject Chinese 5G." - Chairman of Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue, Keith Krach Read the full op-ed here: https://lnkd.in/gC43xjvz
