Happy International Day of Education 📚 An extensive academic research study carried out (by University of Birmingham) in 2023 revealed that 14 to 15 year olds have a lack confidence in schools’ handling of issues surrounding #race and #religion. Less than half (47%) of the students surveyed agreed that the history of people from their #racial or #ethnic background is accurately taught in their school. Today is the International Day of Education 2024 🌎 Education is a universal right crucial for peace and development. This year's theme, "Learning for Lasting Peace," emphasizes the transformative power of education in a world facing conflicts, discrimination, and hate speech. Time to Transform Education  Currently, 250 million children and youth are out of school, and 763 million adults are illiterate. This violates their right to education. To break the cycle of poverty and achieve gender equality, we must work towards inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all. Countering Hate Speech through Education This year, UNESCO focuses on the vital role of education and teachers in countering hate speech, a growing concern fueled by social media. Today is International Day of Education. #wemarists believe in the power of education to form good Christians and good citizens, with strong minds and gentle hearts. From UNSECO: Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind. Today, 250 million children and youth are out of school, and 763 million adults are illiterate. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. It's time to transform education. The sixth International Day of Education will be celebrated on 24 January 2024 under the theme “learning for lasting peace”. The world is seeing a surge of violent conflicts paralleled by an alarming rise of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and hate speech. The impact of this violence transcends any boundary based on geography, gender, race, religion, politics, offline and online. An active commitment to peace is more urgent today than ever: Education is central to this endeavour, as underlined by the UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development. Learning for peace must be transformative, and help empower learners with the necessary knowledge, values, attitudes and skills and behaviours to become agents of peace in their communities.

Today marks the Unesco International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. As Higher Education professionals, just some of the ways we can help in advancing this movement towards equality and inclusivity, include: - Actively seek out diverse perspectives and voices in our curriculum, research, and campus activities. - Embrace the richness that diversity brings to our educational institutions. - Create an environment where every student and professional regardless of their race or ethnicity, feels welcomed, respected, and valued. - Challenge stereotypes and confront instances of discrimination head-on. - Offer educational programs and resources that raise awareness about racial discrimination and its impact. - Equip students and professionals with the knowledge and skills to become advocates for social justice. Does your school drive race equality all year long? It's Race Equality Week, and we're trying to help unite staff, focus senior leaders and encourage them to continue equality activity in their schools. 👊🏻 Race Equality Week runs from Today, 5th February to 11th February - it's an annual UK-wide movement uniting thousands of schools, organisations and individuals to make change. This year's theme is #ListenActChange because although there has been lots of listening and discussing, there hasn't been enough meaningful change. We asked our Education Lead, Kirsty Treherne, to provide some key facts about the importance of racial equality in schools: 🏆 Students who identify as "Chinese" or "Indian" have the highest educational achievement among 19 ethnic groups studied. 🎓 Within UK universities, Black individuals constitute a mere 2.9% of academic staff and are the least likely among all ethnic groups to attain a first-class degree. 📝 In GCSEs, White, Black-African, and Pakistani children have comparable achievement rates of 50.9%. ✅ Chinese students ‘overachieve’ 19% above the national average, while Indian students achieve 11% above the national average in GCSEs. 📚 The majority of primary school children are White British at 65.5%. 🖋️ Pakistani and Bangladeshi students underachieve in GCSEs by 7%. 📉 Irish Traveller and Gypsy Roma children exhibit the highest levels of underachievement, reaching 30%. #raceequalityweek #awareness #understanding #diversity #empathy #education #edtech #educationsector

The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) has signed MoUs with Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University and Fatima Jinnah Women’s University to promote human rights education. This collaboration aims to empower students, foster a culture of respect, equality, and justice, and prevent human rights violations through education. NCHR Chairperson Rabiya Javeri Agha emphasized the importance of partnerships with educational institutes in building a society that values human rights principles. The International Day of Education fills us with a certain sadness. Sadness for more than 30 million girls who do not attend elementary school, or nearly 100 million girls who do not attend secondary school (with Afghanistan as a dramatic example of this situation). Sorrow over almost a quarter of the world's adolescent girls aged 15 to 19 who are neither in further education nor in paid employment. We are also very concerned about the fact that around two thirds of the 770 million illiterate people worldwide are women. We are of course delighted for all the girls and young women who receive an education and thus increase their chances of an easier future. But as long as education does not have 100% coverage, we cannot sit back and relax. #InternationalEducationDay #Education #illiteracy #EducationForAll
