Health and Safety. Not the most interesting subject to most of us, in fact the very mention of it makes many people roll their eyes and hark back to yesteryear when we were happy and common sense taught us the way to A&E. We embrace health and safety. It shapes our business, in an industry which is, frankly, fraught with danger. Working at heights, manual handling, forklifts, cable strikes, falling objects, chemicals, electrical hazards, noise, and power tools! It’s impossible to completely avoid accidents and injuries, we have to accept that, but as an employer and supplier, we have to do everything reasonable to avoid and mitigate danger. We’ve had our share of (fortunately) minor incidents, but every one has been critically analysed with a view to making sure we are doing what we can to prevent a repeat occurrence. So far so good. There’s always room for improvement. We’re guided by our H&S consultant, who continually sets goals to keep us on our toes. We’ll never be quite good enough, and that’s exactly how it needs to be. We’re delighted to have received our renewed CHAS Accreditation. Like any other H&S scheme, t’s not the silver bullet, it’s no guarantee that nothing will go wrong, but it gives us a regular target to hit, and removes any complacency. There are many marquee suppliers to choose from. Can I suggest that you start with one who takes health and safety seriously? In the first instance, look for MUTA Accreditation. This is an industry-specific scheme which immediately sorts the good from the bad. By the way, we also enjoy building beautiful, award-winning marquees. Safely.
