Our IMechE Formula Student team, Team Bath Racing Electric (TBRe), proudly represented the University of Bath at Silverstone this month. Competing against 121 teams with 63 cars, including 32 electric entries, TBRe showcased remarkable innovation and resilience. The team's highlights of this event include: 1. Debuting our first-ever full carbon-fibre chassis, developed with ingenious manufacturing techniques on a tight budget. 2. Reaching the finals in both the Business Plan and Cost & Manufacturing events. 3. Successfully overcoming significant scrutineering challenges, thanks to the sportsmanship of the University of Birmingham team. Despite a brake fluid leak and a 12v battery issue during the Endurance race, our team demonstrated competitive pace and exceptional problem-solving skills. The hard work paid off as they won the Cost and Manufacturing event, with judges praising their carbon accounting on par with industry best practices. The team is now looking forward to building on this success in the upcoming events in Germany and Portugal. #TeamBathRacingElectric #FormulaStudent #Engineering #Innovation #Sustainability #UniversityOfBath #ProudToBeBath

I think it's fair to say that the UK is the de facto lead in motorsport engineering and we need to support that position so that we have a sustainable future for motorsport. There are two streams in engineering - 1. Academic - students wanting to do design, development and research, 2. Vocational/Practical - the 'Hands On' side, the mechanics and engineers who set the cars up, prepare the cars, rebuild them after accidents - the team members you see outside the garages doing the pitstops in F1. There is a serious shortage of suitable engineers, but particularly on the practical side. We have been advised that in July 2025 funding for the two mainstream 'motorsport' vocational qualifications is being withdrawn. We have heard that this is due to them not being able to demonstrate sufficient take up of careers in the motorsport sector. The reason for that is that they are not delivering the correct skills. SCU Motorsport undertook 10 months of research in 2019, supported by Ufi VocTech Trust, talking to race team managers and mechanics in WEC, ELMS, British GT, F4 and many other series to validate our approach. We also spoke to race car manufacturers and the supply chain and the unanimous feedback is that they would not take on students that had just completed either of the two mainstream qualifications. Why wasn't any analysis undertaken before making a decision to withdraw funding? Surely it would make more sense to understand the problem and address it - that is what SCU Motorsport have done and we constantly get feedback on our programme "that is what is needed". We are writing a qualification based on the feedback from the motorsport sector. We are in discussions with an awarding body for them to become our accreditation body. This is a sector that delivers £10 Billion to the UK Economy - struggling to get engineers with the right experience and skills, students who want to enter the motorsport sector and the funding to support this is being withdrawn. We will continue to develop our qualification based on the overseas interest we have. #fia #motorsporteducation Photo credit to GOV UK.

The Edinburgh University Formula Student Team has been dominating the driverless category at Formula Student competitions for the past 6 years! 🏆🏎️ A key factor behind their success? Adopting innovative design tools like the Arcadia Design Suite for electrical wiring harnesses and connections. Previously, the team relied on manual methods and Excel, leading to issues like: 🔴 Power and cable loss 🔴 Poor space utilization 🔴 Ambiguous debugging process 🔴 Material waste and time inefficiencies By integrating Arcadia, they overcame these challenges and achieved: ✅ Consistency and efficiency through an intuitive, error-checking interface ✅ Enhanced design and production quality to gain a competitive edge ✅ Simulations enabling optimal wire/connector selection and reduced loss ✅ Time and material cost savings through efficient design The benefits of adopting innovative digital design solutions are clear for the EUFS team. Their success showcases the value of leveraging cutting-edge tools to drive performance and results. Spinout About:Energy has sponsored five teams entering the Formula Student engineering competition, which challenges students to design, build, test and race small-scale formula-style racing cars, powered by petrol engines or electric motors. Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (iMechE), Formula Student is one of Europe’s most established educational engineering competitions which uses motorsport to inspire students. About:Energy will provide each with cutting-edge simulation tools and education resources to enhance battery pack design, driving engineering innovation in battery development in motorsports and the wider industry. About:Energy, which span out of the University of Birmingham and Imperial College London in 2022, and the sponsorship includes teams from both. The company has a close history with Formula Student with several of its employees previously participating in the programme including Gavin White, CEO of About:Energy, who was Team Leader of Queen’s Formula Student team which placed as the fourth best UK team in 2018. He said: “Formula student is an incredible competition in which students get to apply skills learnt through school and university to a high-performance project. I thoroughly enjoyed my time leading the team at Queen’s in Belfast and it was there I learnt many of the professional skills which I now use every day as a founder/CEO. We are committed to giving back by providing the tools to enable the next generation of battery engineers.” Jacob Haseldine, Lead Engineer of the University of Birmingham's Formula Student team, UBRacing University of Birmingham said: “About:Energy has helped us understand how cell voltage response affects performance, and how we can adjust our control strategy to mitigate the risks of reaching voltage limits prematurely. The models enable us to accurately simulate battery behaviour, driving key design decisions for the team.” Press release at https://lnkd.in/ecs4pHvQ #batteries #batterytechnology #energyinnovation #engineeringeducation #skillsdevelopment #motorsport #formularacing
