In this brief article, together with Hulya YILMAZ TEMEL, Ph.D., Lecturer, we analyzed the state of deep tech in the Aegean Region and Izmir. Deep tech entrepreneurship is flourishing with strong support from universities, research centers, and science parks, fostering innovation in healthcare, biotechnology, and renewable energy. Incubation programs and industry partnerships are driving commercialization, though challenges remain in funding and IP management. As educational programs evolve, the region is set to become a major hub for deep-tech startups, shaping future industries.

Deep tech entrepreneurship is rapidly transforming scientific research into groundbreaking technologies that address complex global challenges. The Aegean Region has research centres and laboratories focused on cutting-edge technologies in healthcare, biotechnology, medical technology, and renewable energy. These facilities equip researchers and students with the resources and infrastructure needed to experiment, prototype, and develop new solutions. By providing a comprehensive support system that spans research, incubation, collaboration, and commercialisation, the Aegean Region can serve as a role model in driving technological advancements. The Biden-Harris administration, through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s economic development administration, is awarding approximately $44 million to the ReGen Valley Tech Hub in New Hampshire. Led by Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI) | BioFabUSA, a DoD Manufacturing Innovation Institute, this consortium aims to bolster the region’s capacity to lead in biofabrication, driving advancements in biotechnology for drugs and medical devices.    ReGen Valley Tech Hub, one of 12 designees to receive implementation funding, will undertake five projects to enhance manufacturing, regulatory, and commercialization resources, develop a skilled biofabrication workforce, and promote regenerative therapies.
