“Please don’t call our oppression a different culture to justify your silence” The courageous Lina Alhathloul reminds delegates at Play the Game that despite claims of reform, women in Saudi Arabia continue to be imprisoned simply for using a hashtag or disobeying their male guardian. Lina’s sister Loujain was arrested and tortured by the Saudi authorities for defying the driving ban a few years ago. She and her family remain under a travel ban. It remains true that there are simply no human rights activists able to speak freely in the country - doing the slightest thing will find you behind bars or forced to flee. There is huge debate about the role of Saudi Arabia in global sport, and whether or not it it a threat or an opportunity to advance human rights. It may be both - a two sided story where certain social openings go hand in hand with the worst and most brutal repression the country has ever seen. We can both celebrate more Saudi women playing sport and be outraged by the fact that more Saudi women are being imprisoned too. The former cannot blind us to the latter. Lina reminds us to keep our eyes open and not be fooled by the government PR. With a World Cup on the horizon, FIFA need to have their eyes open too - and demand meaningful reforms before any World Cup selection is confirmed. Not doing so would be a historic mistake. Voices like Lina are powerful, authentic - and rare. Because if Lina spoke like this at home, we would no longer hear from her. #ptg2024 #humanrights #saudiarabia #fifa #sportsbiz #womensrights #womenssport #responsiblesport

Let's bring divisive politics to the field, shall we? FIFA is now taking sides. A proposal initiated by the Palestine Football Association (PFA) to suspend Israel from FIFA gained significant traction at the 34th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress in Bangkok. “The AFC is only as strong as its members and when one suffers, all its other members are affected,” AFC President Sheikh Salman told delegates on Thursday. “The AFC stands together with the Palestine FA, and we join them in seeking effective football-related solutions to the grievances raised by the Palestine FA in their proposal. It is our duty to support the Palestine FA for a swift and effective resolution in line with the rules, regulations and statutes of the AFC and FIFA.” Submitted to FIFA in March, the PFA’s proposal accused the Israel Football Association (IFA) of being complicit in the Israeli government’s “discriminatory” practices against Arab soccer. They argued that the IFA has failed to advocate for the free movement of its players, hindering their ability to participate in training, matches, and tournaments. The PFA further claimed that Israel has no right to hold soccer matches in Judea and Samaria as those areas in the Jewish State are considered “occupied” by international law. Several Arab AFC member nations, including Algeria, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen, have already backed the PFA’s proposal. #diversityequityinclusion #dei
