Leaders of Elering, Augstsprieguma tīkls AS and Litgrid met in Vilnius today 👇 ⚡ The meeting participants discussed the progress of synchronisation with continental Europe and the next steps The disconnection of the electricity systems of the Baltic states from Russia and their connection to the continental European frequency area is a matter of concern for the whole of society and the biggest change in the energy sector since the restoration of independence, for which Estonia and its neighbouring countries have been preparing for decades and which will culminate at the beginning of next year. In energy terms, its significance is comparable to joining the European Union and NATO, which also adds the responsibility of independent frequency management. 🗓 In all three countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), the necessary work is progressing on schedule. Latest important steps in Estonia 👇 - reconstruction of the Viru-Tsirguliina overhead line, of which around 90% is complete - upgrading of the Scada control system, much of which involves the introduction of principles for automatic frequency management and tools for analysing the stability of the electricity network. In addition, data links between Scada and other information systems are being upgraded and modernised - also being upgraded are information screens for the energy system management, which display the status of the energy system, the results of the stability analysis and the automatic frequency management process Together with the other Baltic states, we will launch a market for frequency reserves ahead of synchronisation, so that we can manage the frequency ourselves. The creation of a new market also contributes to ensuring that we have enough power plants in and around Estonia to meet the ever increasing demand for electricity. 🤝 In order to be able to join the continental European frequency area in February 2025, Elering has assigned 15 full-time employees and about 40 part-time employees, plus main contractors and subcontractors. The entire major project comprises over 50 projects. CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency #CEFEnergy #PCIList

Bussines development between Germany and the Baltics | clean tech | energy industry | circular economy | geothermal
There is finally a concrete date for other step towards Europe of the Baltic states. The Baltic states will decouple their electricity transmission networks from the Russian controlled BRELL on the February 8th 2025. Connection to Central European Synchronous Area (CESA) will follow the next day. Considering the installation of nine synchronous compensators in the Baltics and two Battery Energy Storage Systems in Latvia the total cost of €1.6 billion sounds reasonable. https://lnkd.in/dmE6TYPD #europe #renewables #sustainability #grid

🏗 Construction of the 330 kV Mūša switchyard starts in the Joniškis district. 💬"The Mūša switchyard, which is being built near the historic site of the Battle of Saulė, will make a significant contribution to the country's goal of energy independence. The new switching station will ensure more reliable electricity supply in Northern Lithuania and will also be an important artery in the electricity transmission grid, connecting Eastern and Western Lithuania. It will also increase the interconnection capacity with Sweden and Latvia, which will enable cheaper electricity imports from Scandinavian countries and electricity exports," said Rokas Masiulis, Litgrid CEO. ⚡The construction of the new 330 kV Mūša switchyard will improve the reliability of the grid, as the longest section of the power line will be almost three times shorter than today. 💡In addition, the interconnection is currently located in a cultural heritage site - the Battle of Saulė. Therefore, the switchyard will be relocated to the north and the power lines will be brought around the cultural heritage protection zone. #EnergyTransformationPartners #BalticSynchro #EnergyIndependence

Our SP7 coordinator Arno van Wingerde from Fraunhofer presents the challenges of materials and structures sub-components in wind turbines (rotorblades of course but also structural aspects). It entails cooperation with other Sub-Programmes, for example Offshore Wind (SP6) or Research infrastructures (SP2). In organising informal workshops, Arno thinks that he format of EERA JP Wind allows researchers to talk together and to find solutions. https://lnkd.in/e8Ci6T9R

Synchronisation Programme Manager at Litgrid AB, President of Lithuanian Project Management Association (IPMA Lietuva), Partnership Assoc. Prof. at Vilnius University Business School, PM coach and consultant.
It's sunny and warm early May in Lithuania, it's another Litgrid #synchronisation Newsletter, and this time we are not focusing on Litgrid. Instead we will be covering the accelerating construction of BESS (battery-based energy storage system) in Latvia, a second such system in the Baltics. Apart from helping to stabilise frequency after the synchronisation, these systems are indispensable in damping increased intermittency of the power supply in the presence of renewable energy sources. While the lithium ion technology of BESS is something that we consider as something new, an older, but no less reliable technology, such as a pumped hydro power stations, are also a part of the wider synchronisation journey we are a part of. The interview with the operator of such a facility in Kruonis and a number of traditional power generators, Ignitis Gamyba, sheds the light on how the company is preparing for and supporting the looming energy transformation in the Baltics.
In the April Synchronisation Newsletter, we take a look at Latvia's progress and Lithuania's largest power plants: 🔋 News from Latvia about a battery energy storage system under construction. What kind of project Latvia’s TSO Augstsprieguma tīkls AS is working on? 🌊 Learn how Kruonis PSHP and other power plants are contributing to Lithuania's national goals of synchronisation with continental Europe. Hear from Darius Kucinas, Head of Production at Ignitis Gamyba, in an exclusive interview. 💡 You are also welcome to see the progress of the synchronisation projects and the map. #EnergyTransformationPartners #Synchronisation #EnergyIndependence #Cooperation

We are pleased to announce that our Zero Terrain demo project in Estonia, the Paldiski 500MW PHS, has been selected for the list of Europe's most important energy projects. European Commission published the first list of the Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs), followed by EU Action Plan for Grids. These key cross-border infrastructure projects will help the EU achieve its energy and climate goals. The projects will benefit from streamlined permitting and regulatory procedures and become eligible for EU financial support from the Connect Europe Facility (CEF). From the point of view of energy storage, it is essential that the EC set a task for the National Regulatory Authorities to ensure that system operators further assess the flexibility needs of their energy systems when planning transmission networks, including the potential of energy storage. To comment, the laws of physics make their way into legislation. #ZeroTerrain
