A sad silver lining being very practical in the 2030s when the barrier reef is a historical wonder, Australia will have a 2000 Km of offshore wind potential region with an average depth of 35m and a width of 60km to 250km. the width of the barrier reef means large parts may be more than 40 km offshore making it relatively obscure visually. As the attached windy.com snapshot illustrates the is a good of conjugality with onshore wind as in it blows well when it's calm onshore in eastern Australia during a winter high pressure weather system. Ironically the offshore windfarm may present strategic opportunity to do local shading of waters in the vicinity of still alive reef remnants to provide cooling and effectively life support for corals in a warm ocean. #windpower #greatbarrierreef #energy #renewables #offshorewind

Fun Fact Friday- there are only 7 ships in the world that meet the requirements to install these gigantic wind turbines. We've had this very large ship in the Halifax harbor as a holding port for components of the largest offshore wind farm in North America, which is being built off the coast of Cape Cod. 62 General Electric Haliade-X 13 MW turbines will power 400,000 homes. The Nacelle weighs just shy of 800 tons and the vessel installing these has to lift them 150 meter ups. Interestingly Tufts University published a research paper in 2021: Wind Turbine Installation Vessels: Global Supply Chain Impacts on the U.S. Offshore Wind Market. Their research identified that only 7 vessels met the requirements of being able to install in 50M depth of water and lift an 800-ton nacelle 150 meters up. Wind turbines have grown in size exponentially, which requires bigger vessels to carry, and more importantly to install. Another challenge identified was that most shipyards are occupied with lucrative Military contracts. Have a great weekend everyone! #halifax #renewables #supplychain #HRM Halifax Regional Municipality Port of Halifax

Famous wins, low benchmarks and misfiring partnerships. No, not Euro 2024... In last week's A Word About Wind analysis piece, I looked at four trends from key European offshore wind tenders in the second quarter of 2024. They are: 🇩🇪 Viability concerns can rupture offshore partnerships; 🇪🇪 Auctions can conclude successfully with one bidder; 🇳🇱 Non-price criteria can help to bolster innovation; and 🇫🇷 Industry warned of using France as floating benchmark. Plus, with England still in Euro 2024 — just about! — you can enjoy a little ill-informed bandwagon-jumping football punditry too. 🎉 ⚽ #notasportswriter Click here: https://lnkd.in/eyJZiGkD #offshorewind #tenders #France #Germany #Netherlands #Estonia A Word About Wind | Energy Storage Report | Tamarindo

Offshore Wind….Local Content!! I applaud the local content this is a huge step forward… I am a supporter and advocate for 100% Local content to be the GOAL always. ?….and what a way to start…..Awesome!!!! Just like Net Zero, Zero safety incident, Zero quality defects etc which are driven by policy and working documents to support achieving these goals. We also need strategic and tactical plans, policy and working document’s to achieve 100% local content.? Realistically like a RISK register if we list out and are transparent: 💚- GREEN - we can make it locally? 🧡- AMBER - could be built locally but automation and standardization and some investment is needed now to turn them to GREEN…£££ ? ❤️ - RED - not possible to build currently (COST should not be the driver if it is we need to revisit AMBER and mitigate from there)? - reason I say cost, is it better the money flowing, even if a little high locally be better than sending work to high value/cheap labor countries for supply, where local content communities and countries receiving these goods don’t see the cash flowing benefits in their communities and the associated benefits? We need a plan to bring that work back and put plans in place £££ (annual rolling tactical plan based on a strategy), to reach 100% local content over GIG scale execution.? Govt and industry need to work together to make this happen.? Am I out in left field with this? Does this seem reasonable? Do you think this is achievable?
CALEDONIA Offshore Wind Farm is targeting 60% local content. We aim to provide opportunities for the supply chain in Scotland to take advantage of Caledonia in development, construction and operation phases. The local supply chain is at the heart of our project. But what does this mean? ✅ Using local ports where possible to bring all components ashore to be assembled and taken offshore for installation ✅ Localising operational hubs in the communities we operate in, drawing on local resources and talents ✅ Investing in the people and infrastructure required to help support Scotland’s long-term offshore wind supply chain Keep an eye on our page to discover more about Caledonia as the project progresses https://lnkd.in/e3wGxHZe #Caledonia #OffshoreWind #FixedWind #ScotWind #GreenEnergy

#Australia is on the brink of an #OffshoreWind revolution. As the industry matures across Europe and other parts of Asia Pacific, what learnings can developers in the region bring to this dynamic and expanding market from the rest of the world? Now that the Federal government in Australia has announced timelines for offshore wind developers to work towards, it is essential to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each site. Questions need to be asked about local and regional supply chains, nearby ports, seabed conditions, metocean parameters, wind resource, grid connection opportunities and environmental sensitivities, to name but a few. Kent has a long established, industry leading reputation in Offshore Wind around the world and is ready to bring all that experience to bear in Australia. In this report, the Kent OSW team delve into some of the challenges and opportunities facing the Perth / Bunbury area. Yep, we've released a new report 🤩 Check out all of the details below! 4C Offshore TGS #offshorewind #marketupdate #report
The TGS | 4C Offshore research team is pleased to present our first Market Update Report, diving deep into pressing issues in global offshore wind. This report will also be published as part of our Q3 2023 Market Overview. This first Market Update Report includes two deep dives. First, an update on the UK’s Leasing Round 5, the Crown Estate's forthcoming round for floating wind in the Celtic Sea. We cover the leasing process, sites identified, evaluation criteria, and potential bidders. We dive into the question of grid connection and examine the need for ports to accommodate floating wind. Second, we analyse the impact of offtake challenges in the US. With inflation impacting costs, a string of major projects are impacted by low offtake prices they locked in before 2022. We look at the impacts on project timelines and on the broader picture of US offshore wind. In a global context, we consider the consequences of abandoning an offtake agreement... The report is available for subscribers to the TGS | 4C Offshore ForeSEE WebApp. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eKGsBeei Not a subscriber? Delighted to see this research published today. The Celtic Sea Blueprint, prepared by Lumen Energy & Environment establishes an evidence base that should act as a call to action for supply chain development and collaboration across the #offshorewind sector. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to capture these opportunities and build on the UK's leading position in #floatingoffshorewind
Offshore wind is a true UK success story – facilitating our #GreenEnergy transition, improving energy security, and powering our economy. Our upcoming leasing round for floating offshore windfarms in the #CelticSea marks a new era for the sector and creates new opportunities onshore. We need new supply chain expertise and infrastructure such as ports and vessels to handle these giant turbines, and cables to moor them and transport the electricity back to shore. The projected benefits to the nation are significant – boosting our economy by £1.4bn and creating 5,300 jobs from the construction of the first three windfarms alone. To make the most of the industrial opportunity, action is needed now. Building on research published today, we’re working with industry, governments, trade bodies and communities to create an action plan to ensure the success not just of the Celtic Sea, but of #FloatingWind, and, as part of the wider UK industrial growth opportunity, help to build on our world-leading position in #OffshoreWind.
