RAAC and attendance recording https://lnkd.in/etnEmhyZ This is what the RAAC guidance says about attendance ( other sections on remote education, safeguarding etc are also important in this document) Prioritising attendance In exceptional circumstances, if there are high levels of disruption due to RAAC which mean you need to temporarily prioritise face-to-face places in your setting, you should give priority to: • vulnerable children and young people • the children of critical workers • pupils due to take public examinations and other formal assessments Attendance Attendance is essential for pupils to get the most out of their school experience, including for their attainment, wellbeing, and wider life chances. Schools and other settings should consider the approaches set out in this guidance while also working closely with pupils parents, carers, and any other relevant partners such as the local authority, to remove any barriers to attendance. Schools should continue to record pupil absence in the register in line with the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 and DfE’s attendance guidance, using the most appropriate code If you need to prioritise attendance by telling some pupils not to attend, the Y code should be used for those pupils, reflecting the exceptional circumstances. Pupils who are required to attend should be recorded in the normal way. The Y code does not count towards the pupil or school’s absence record

When prevention is undoubtedly better than cure. The recent news about RAAC (reinforced autoclave aerated concrete) has spotlighted the old adage – prevention is better than cure. RAAC, which is weaker than normal concrete, was used to construct schools, colleges and other buildings from the 1950s until the mid-1990s. These issues have brought into focus the benefits of having regular comprehensive surveys to assess the fabric of any building. This helps produce a planned preventative maintenance schedule which allows the condition of items and their life expectancy to be considered and any required works planned and expenditure budgeted for. This announcement underscores the critical importance of prioritizing safety and infrastructure in our educational institutions. While it's concerning that existing school-rebuilding funds might be diverted, it's imperative that all students and staff have access to safe learning environments. Clear timelines and robust catch-up provisions for affected pupils are crucial, and I echo the call for a comprehensive plan to address not just Raac but all school building issues. Kudos to the educators, administrators, and local authorities for their tireless efforts in ensuring the safety and well-being of our children.
The impact of RAAC in schools is still being felt by both students and staff as it is announced over 100 buildings need to be rebuilt or refurbished. 🔗https://lnkd.in/e-QYqfXT #constructionconsulting #connectshareachieve #quantitysurveying #commercialmanagement #designmanagement #contractorsupport #construction

More than 100 school buildings containing a dangerous concrete will be rebuilt or refurbished, the government has confirmed. It says all affected schools will receive funding to permanently remove it - although, unions say the announcement includes no new money. In England, 234 schools contain reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac). The material was used as a cheaper alternative to standard concrete. We are not affected by RAAC. You may be aware of recent media coverage regarding Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) and its use in schools. RAAC is a lightweight form of concrete; because it is weaker than regular concrete and concerns have been raised about its long-term durability. The Department for Education (DfE) has recently changed its guidance to education settings on the management of RAAC to take a more precautionary approach. Our nine primary schools do not have any confirmed RAAC in buildings and have not been asked to close any areas. The start of term at Banwell, Bournville, Locking, Mead Vale, Mendip Green, Milton Park, Oldmixon, Walliscote and Windwhistle is therefore not currently affected by this issue at this time. We want to take care and to be sure, and are currently working with the DfE to check whether RAAC has been used in the construction of any part of our buildings. If RAAC is identified, we will let you know straight away and take appropriate action. Rest assured that the safety of all pupils and staff is always our top priority. We look forward to seeing all pupils again next week, as follows: Monday 4th September: Inset day for staff only training. Schools closed to pupils. Tuesday 5 September: Inset day for staff only training. Schools closed to pupils. Wednesday 6 September: Term starts for children. Reception classes will have school specific arrangements.

After a long summer holiday going back to school is usually a time of nerves, excitement and a feeling of 'back to normality'. For some students in the UK this won't be the case, Following a collapsed beam at a school, an emergency decision was made to halt the return to classrooms for over 100 schools. As of 6 September, while most schools have put mitigations in place and have opened for the start of term, 20 schools have put hybrid arrangements in place and 19 have delayed the start of term by a couple of days so pupils can return safely on site. Only 4 have moved to remote learning. Nine settings have since been found not to have RAAC. RAAC is a lightweight, ‘bubbly’ form of concrete commonly used in construction between the 1950s and mid-1990s. It is predominantly found as precast panels in roofs, commonly found in flat roofs, and occasionally in floors and walls. It is known to have a lifespan of approximately 30 years and is prone to collapse. It may be found in any school and college building that was either built or modified in this time period. However, RAAC isn’t the only concern, as asbestos was regularly used in construction during the same period. In fact, figures released by the Department for Education (DfE) in 2019 revealed asbestos is present in four in five schools in England.Consequently many buildings containing RAAC will also contain asbestos, which makes it more difficult to safely remove RAAC and also makes the consequences of collapse even more serious. With construction work needing to be done immediately on buildings that likely contain asbestos, the public urgency to fix the RAAC problem needs to respect the risk of asbestos exposure for those undertaking the work and staff and pupils alike. https://lnkd.in/eiMmHb_z #raac #government #schools #asbestos #asbestoscontainingmaterials #tickingtimebomb
