This past week, the World Green Organisation held the ESG for Climate Actions International Summit「ESG XCHANGE 2024:ESG 氣候行動國際峰會」at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. It was very informative and educational. The term ESG has been ringing in my ears and peppered into conversations with associates. ESG is a framework to evaluate a company's or investment's sustainability and ethical impact. ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. · Environmental factors, such as carbon footprint or resource usage, reflect the company's environmental impact. · Social factors in the company's relationships with its employees, customers, and communities, including diversity and inclusion initiatives. · Governance factors in the company's leadership, transparency, and accountability, including board composition and executive compensation. One might "ask, "What does Microalgae Cultivation and Application have to do with ESG?" Microalgae cultivation and application are closely tied to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles through various impactful ways. Firstly, they contribute to a positive environmental impact by absorbing carbon dioxide, treating wastewater, and improving water quality. Secondly, utilizing non-arable land promotes efficient resource management and reduces pressure on traditional agricultural resources. Additionally, microalgae serve as a sustainable feedstock for biofuels, aiding in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing energy sector sustainability. Moreover, their societal benefits include generating employment opportunities and addressing food security and malnutrition issues. Lastly, companies involved in microalgae cultivation demonstrate strong governance by prioritizing transparency, regulatory compliance, and ethical practices in their operations, thus aligning with ESG principles effectively. "Corn" comes in various varieties: (a) the corn we love to grill over the BBQ, (b) the corn popped, and (c) the corn grown to feed animals (field/dent corn). Each of these varieties possess distinct attributes and characteristics. A little-known fact is that in the past 20 years, the global corn production has doubled from ~600 million metric tons (mT) to ~1.2 billion mT (with the majority of it being dent corn), contributing to improved food security, increased energy independence, and a reduction in CO2 emissions. Interestingly, in the USA over that same period, the acreage (land-use) allocated to corn fields has remained largely unchanged, while experiencing a yield growth of over 40%. With all the talk on inflation and rising costs, the price of corn is currently at multi-year lows and the surplus (barring any weather event) is looking to grow in the years to come. The price of food at your local grocery store is much more correlated to the oil price and international conflicts than what the farmer is paid for his/her crop.
