Teams should always resemble either a diamond or a pyramid. Diamond: 1 senior, 2 mid level, 1 junior Pyramid: 1 senior, 2 mid level, 3 junior Along those proportions. Teams also should be larger than 6 people plus the manager. (And the manager is not the senior!) I personally prefer the pyramid. I’ll take that over a team of all seniors any day of the week. Why? Because as a manager, your goal is to grow your team members, and in a pyramid, the senior mentors the juniors, pairs with the mids, and still has bandwidth to take on the critical 10% of the project. Everybody is learning, including the senior, who is learning leadership and strategy.
When does it make sense to hire a junior-level developer over a senior-level developer? Let's assume cost has nothing to do with it. Is it bad for a team to have 5 senior-level developers and no junior developers? I've heard arguments before that you would have too many "cooks in the kitchen." Should a team always have a balance of junior and mid-level people to do the work more senior-level people delegate and architect for them? A team of only junior-level people is usually not ideal. Is a team of only senior-level people also problematic? What is your experience with various team structures? 👉 Join 11,000 others for my newsletter, "The Visionary CTO": https://lnkd.in/gyDvpfm7

This week we had a discussion with a potential client that only wanted to pay for the time that we were writing actual code, and wanted us to keep track of that. I had to explain that writing code is only a miniscule small fraction of delivering high-quality software. A software developers job is not only writing code. Anyone can do that, you can hire monkeys for it (or let AI do it). It's actually the other way around. It's about finding solutions that require as little code as possible. Needless to say, we skipped on that project. #PlcProgramming #SoftwareDevelopment

Building my portfolio. Why code these static things when you know Notion , such an amazing tool 🔥 Things left to get added - Projects and achievements and some images. Will be using this portfolio till I get some time to code one. I am planning to complete 2 to 3 full stack projects in 1 month. Although it is going to be tough but it will be quite fun and challenging. And when I am creating projects definitely it will be something unique and solve some of my problems. #notion #portfolio #developer #projects #learningjourney #learningeveryday

The dreaded software plateau. You have the tools to get the job done… but could your software do more… or do it better? Usually, the answer is yes. The hard part is figuring out how to make that happen. That’s why hiring a one-and-done developer is a risky move. Your developers should be able to guide you out of that software plateau and help you utilize and customize your tech to continually improve productivity. There’s always a way up - work with someone who cares about getting you there. #software #customtools #development
