Happy Friday all! This week, The Balmoral Group Australia director, Grant Leslie FIML, was inducted as an Australian Water Association NSW Water Legend. This honor acknowledges his immense contributions to the water industry and his commitment to a sustainable water future. In his acceptance speech, Grant shared valuable insights, drawing from his experience. He emphasized the increasing challenges in addressing issues like drought, noting, 'As we have already optimized our resources, for example, through water efficient measures, the path forward demands making larger investment decisions'. This perspective highlights the need for bold and innovative approaches in our ongoing challenge with water security. Grant also offered advice that resonates deeply, both professionally and personally: 'Be the change you want to see and follow your passion'. His remarkable journey, from humble beginnings in the Far West, spanned six diverse careers in the water industry, and stands as a testament to this ethos. As we celebrate Grant's well-deserved recognition, we are inspired by his commitment and vision. His words serve as a reminder of our responsibility and potential in shaping a sustainable water future. Watershed Security Coalition - marked World Rivers Day by calling on all political parties to commit to the stewardship of B.C.’s waterways as the proince faces a cycle of water-related crises. Read the Op-Ed for the costs of the problem and details on the solutions. Three essential actions to build a more secure future are needed: 💧 Establish local watershed boards "Establishing a provincewide system of watershed boards would provide dedicated local leadership. Regions that already have these boards, like the Cowichan and Okanagan, benefit from proactive water management" 💧Value waterways the same as other essential infrastructure "In 2021, the B.C. government invested $27 million in watershed projects through the Healthy Watersheds Initiative, followed by $30 million in 2022... Restored creeks and wetlands protected local businesses during floods. First Nations and farmers worked together to ensure water and food security during drought, and Indigenous-led stewardship improved outcomes for both people and salmon." ... "For less than the cost of a single bridge or highway, the province would ensure a legacy of healthy and secure watersheds for all British Columbians." 💧Grow the watershed workforce "The Healthy Watersheds Initiative generated 1,517 jobs over two years... A 2021 economic study identified the potential for 13,000 new jobs in B.C.’s watershed sector over the next decade."

Here are key takeaways for now. ✔️ Metropolitan Water District of Southern California's efforts to better understand the business of agriculture – including which crops need more water and when they're more water intensive – have led to more effective allocation strategies. ✔️ Making business decisions purely on the basis of water flow is a mistake. Agricultural leaders must adapt their management, lean on sound science, and advocate for policies that balance rural and urban priorities. ✔️ The Central Valley's F-word? "Fallowing." Forcing agricultural communities to forgo water to make up for supply deficits elsewhere has serious economic and environmental costs.

Despite being eligible for a £237,000 bonus, Davy prioritised public sentiment and corporate responsibility. This decision follows a challenging year for the company, marked by a significant parasite outbreak affecting thousands and a record fine for sewage spills. Pennon Group is also revamping its bonus scheme to focus more on customer service and environmental performance. Last week i joined this Tenant Farmers Association webinar on landlord and tenant relationships. What an enlightening and encouraging event it was! I asked the question about whether or not the speakers viewed the tenant and landlord relationship as an equal partnership. The strong message of reply from both speakers was that it is a partnership, there must be full engagement between tenant farmers and landlords. Both parties have a responsibility to work things out. Stand out comments included: “The power for both parties to do good is tangible. It’s about humility and fairness, this is often the family home, the livelihood. There’s a moral responsibility.” The reality is of course, that it is it far from an equal partnership. Landlords and tenants have very different starting points. When you’re in dispute or negotiation with large institutions, with vast wealth and access to greater funds and professional advice, the playing field is not level or fair. Both the The Crown Estate and The Duchy Of Cornwall gave a fascinating insight into their own land management plans which were inclusive and helpful to tenant farmers and landlords. It gave us and all tenants hope. If tenant farms are successful, the landlord will also see a success. Large, high profile Estates such as these have the power to set the precedent for standards of behaviour throughout the country. Their positive examples only helps to highlight the poor behaviour of other landowners and landlords. Farming is going through a huge transition and we must all adapt and respond collaboratively and positively. Tenants and landlords may have different perspectives but consultation is key.
