Health Equity! Visión y Compromiso will close the gap in public health care and social services, family by family, in Boyle Heights in Los Angeles, CA. Our partnership with Rising Communities, WHITE MEMORIAL COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER (WMCHC), and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health aims to provide neighborhood-level intervention to close the gap in addressing social determinants of health and build health equity. Visión y Compromiso is one of 10 community-based organizations to partner with Rising Communities along with 10 healthcare partners in 10 high-priority, service areas throughout Los Angeles County, to implement the Community Public Health Teams (CPHT) Pilot Project. This project aims to build long-term relationships with at least 80,000 households in Los Angeles County. Visión y Compromiso will coordinate with other service providers in Boyle Heights to provide outreach, engagement, and services to families. “By designing a long-term partnership with community-based organizations and health care partners to conduct household and community services, Public Health is expanding the public health workforce and building infrastructure for a community-based system of care.” Department of Public Health. We’re excited to share that Greenspace’s Harry Williams will present alongside Choptank Community Health System’s Director of Behavioral Health, Vicki Rahenkamp LCPC, CCTP, at the North Carolina Community Health Center Association (NCCHCA) conference next week! In this session, Harry and Vicki will provide an overview of Measurement-Based Care and walk through Choptank’s implementation as an example of successfully leveraging MBC in practice at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Here are some of the key learnings attendees can expect from the session: ➡️ What Measurement-Based Care is and the key research and implementation data supporting its impact in practice. ➡️ Implementation considerations for FQHCs, based on a practical example. ➡️ How a Community of Practice helps support implementation and continuous learning within a FQHC. Last week, Black Men's Health Clinic (BMHC) was represented at the Black Men's Brain Health Conference in Las Vegas for Super Bowl Week, where BMHC board president, Dr. Larry Wallace Jr., Ph.D., spoke from an organizational perspective on community engagement. BMHC sat on a diverse panel called "Working with Community Partners" at the event. The panel was moderated by Lisa Barnes, Ph.D., of Rush University, and other panel participants were Harry Evans of Heal Black Men, José Melendrez, Executive Director of Community Partnerships of the University of North Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Public Health, and Jason Flatt, Ph.D., MPH from the Nevada Minority Health and Equity Coalition. Questions were addressed from the audience and there was notable dialogue amongst the panelists. BMHC Board President Wallace made several compelling statements, but there is one we would like to point out in this article. Dr. Larry Wallace Jr. said, "It is important that we make sure we don't go "cookie cutter" when we are working to engage the community. We need to think about our target audience, their comfortability, and understand the people we serve well enough to create pockets of safe spaces from one neighborhood to another." He went on further to express that fundamentally, we need to take the time to relate to the people we serve and show them we care. Simply because people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. If you’re looking for an organization to support with your 3 T’s (time, talent, treasure), I highly recommend considering LCS. Bridging the gap between the public and public services is the most critical function a nonprofit organization can have to ensure we are still leveraging public resources as much as possible before supplementing with philanthropy.
