Will #LLMs trained using audio recording rather than text, have English language fillers in the model? I am not a GenAI/LLM/AI/ML expert. I am a marketing science, research professional with Intuit Research – who is lucky not to be replaced by AI yet, but then again… Let me give you the context… Earlier this week I was helping my son, with his English IO preparation for IB. IO stands for Individual Oral where each student gets to prepare on a topic and then speak for 10 minutes. In an IO, a student has to choose two texts – one literary and one non-literary text; and then prepare and present an oral response. I had never done this in my curriculum back in the eighties and early nineties. But I am sure I won a few brownie points with Ojas. When he spoke he used a few fillers just like me, most of them were adverbs (Basically, Actually, Seriously). I asked him to practice a couple more times and watch out for these fillers. I am sure he would do well in his IO. After this experience the researcher in me could not sit idle. I had a #hypothesis that spoken English has higher probability of having fillers than written English and may have a strong correlation with things such as our #Mothertongue, our community, fluency in spoken English, our #vocabulary, and the #generation we belong to (well-read versus well-watched as I like to call). When we write we tend to take more time compared to when we speak. Great orators take more pauses and have lower words per minute. So, I did some research on my own and found some articles on common English fillers. Here is an interesting list of common English language fillers: itself, basically, actually, honestly, already, I mean, believe me (not Believe you me – that’s too British or Shakespearean), you Know, frankly, yeah, right, so, oh, like, what I mean, at the end of the day, I guess, and I suppose. I am sure the NLP scientists already know this. This is not a Eureka moment in my life. But this brings to life an interesting question which is - If we were to train a LLM model using existing audio clips/recording (say call center conversation with customers) will the virtual assistant use fillers like we humans do? More interestingly should a virtual assistant use fillers to mimic humans who speak differently than how they write. I remember in the early online translation days, translations appeared #synthetic and #unnatural. A native speaker of that language would never phrase statements in that manner. If LLMs and GenAI are to replace humans and improve #CX, should they accommodate a bit of flaws that are not #harmful? Will such models feel more natural and get faster acceptance? After all humans are not perfect. These AI models can negate human error in terms of facts and figures, but allowed to have some leeway such as using fillers to feel humane. A friend sent me a link to an article about English teachers having concerns that they had students using AI to write papers for them. I can understand that you don't want someone to say, "AI, write a 5 paragraph paper about living your best life and have a paragraph on each of living in an apartment, budgeting, and getting to places that I need to go." Voila! A paper magically appears! I'm not crazy about that idea! However, I don't have a problem with using AI to enhance written communication. I see AI writing from a different perspective from some other teachers. While I want ALL students to be effective writers, some of my students cannot do that. It's not a lack of will; their written language skills are impaired, and no amount of teaching, practice, or raising the bar will change that. What that means is that one crucial part of their communication is cut off, simply non-functional. They are unable to share their thoughts and ideas in a coherent written form. THAT really impacts many parts of their lives. AI is a game-changer for them, where they can connect their thoughts to written language in a way that makes sense to a reader. When I first encountered Goblin Tools, a set of robust AI tools, I saw the potential in The Formalizer. It has a way to take text that is disjointed and make sense from it. There are 14 different types of tone that a user can access. If GT is not saying what you want it to say, you can change the tone or tweak what was in the output, then copy/paste it into the input, then convert again. Wow! Look at this example that I've written. It could have been written by one of my students. 1. i want of be live not with paents indepdnt. gols r have aprtmt in few yesrs. You can get a kernel if thought from these sentences. Here is what Goblin Tools does. 2. I want to live independently and not with my parents. My goal is to have my own apartment in a few years. (This is EXACTLY what I meant!) Number 1 is a mishmash that won't get a student points. The second is coherent. I could take it one step further and move the tone from sociable to professional. I aspire to live independently from my parents. My goal is to have my own apartment within the next few years. The goal of writing is communication. Effective communication. If AI can help students write more effectively and communicate ideas, I am for it. I use Goblin Tools in my writing when I want a specific tone. I use The Judge to tell me how my emails sound; I want to make sure that it agrees with what my intent is. I love that Goblinator, and so do my students.

In response to recent feedback from customers and papers claiming that AI writing detection tools are biased against writers whose first language is not English, Turnitin expanded its false positive evaluation to include writing samples of English Language Learners (ELL). “Our AI Writing detector’s false positive rate is less than 1% for documents with 20% or more AI writing (our tests showed that in cases where we detect less than 20% of AI writing in a document, there is a higher incidence of false positives)” Read more :-) #ai #aiineducation #turnitn https://lnkd.in/euNuqsh7

I love generative AI (check out www.pika.art!) but couldn't agree more that teaching students communication and writing skills is critical. I often get the question of why we would not let just Chat GPT generate questions from students to alumni; here's why: (1) Authenticity is key to building relationships, and alumni want to hear from a real human being. Take the time to share what you need help with and don't worry about perfection > show the true you. Broken English from an international student / non-native speaker (yeap, that includes me) is fine because that is who you are. (2) We are big believers in teaching students (and alumni) how to "fish" by teaching them how to ask for help, how to network. Because there are few life skills more important. But we won't do the work for you because it's more than just a transaction, it's skill development. The risk of generative #ai writing all of our emails and making us more distant is real (looking at you fundraisers ...). Just because we can, doesn't mean we should. https://lnkd.in/gURpe4cy
