Backstage with Matthew: Anticipating Innocence is out now. "Innocence is a work that touches on issues so present in the world around us, not only in themes around gun violence, but also around bullying, the impacts of trauma, social media, and many others … There are moments on the opera stage that stay with one for all time, such is the intensity of the emotional experience. For me, Innocence has been one of those moments and I cannot wait to share it with you. It is a piece that resonates powerfully for long-time opera goers and brand-new opera goers alike – it is a complete immersion into a topic that is sadly far too prevalent in our world, but in a way that gives us a different entry point into understanding the many facets and implications of this extreme trauma." Leonard Cohen said the discipline of rhyming allows one to go through one’s inventory of words. Meaning, the right rhyme is secondary to the right word. So in this case, a rhyming dictionary, which I use, is a kind of Thesaurus. This is one example where limitations (the discipline of rhyming) can lead us to more creative choices, using words we might not have considered otherwise. Coal Mine Theatre has built a solid reputation with this approach of using limitations to their advantage. The current production of Dion: A Rock Opera could not have been created anywhere else. The limitations make it what it is: an alternative to the conventional rock opera. In another theatrical space, perhaps one that is more conventional, it would be a very different show. All this to say, how pleased I am to have witnessed this incarnation. Whatever might come next, in whatever venue, will benefit from the unconventional approach that took the show to this point. I hope that is something we can build on.

I will try to attempt to explain it how I see it. To understand, consider how policies integrated within the United States were in response to nuclear annihilation. These were very real lived experiences. Israel was United State’s defense policy. It is this partnership Biden defends. Another reason why we should not have an individual whose age is disconnected with today’s generation led. Biden is defending a policy from the cold war that defined his generation. From this perspective - to cut Israel off, is to cut America’s own leg off. From here - Israel and the United States' partnership were imprinted onto its governance model. Trauma can be structurally imprinted on a nation’s goverance model. Now - the United States, due to various complex factors, does not need #Israel, however, Israel faces an #existential crisis without it. Further, US policies have been shifting away from Israel for decades. In this sense - the war is meant to cause disruption, especially in democracies, and help push right-wing governments. In the case of the United States - Israel’s genocide is an attempt to get #Trump a win. In Canada - push a win for the Conservative Party of Canada. By the way - its not #Russia, #China, or #India the main culprit but #Israel who is interfering in #Canadian and #American elections. I mean - everyone is trying to drive divisions and break national cohesion from the corporation to individual nations but only #Israel and corporations hold the levers to distrupt #UnitedState’s elections. Sure, its about power and consolidation of wealth but which has weaponize fear and a precieved existential crisis by #Israel. Here, behind their hate is fear. It is also a win for China - why? Because China will become the lead of the civilized world. For Israel - an authoritarian right-wing government in democracies and in the United States will allow it support to carve itself out a greater Israel. From where #Israel and their government stand - a democratic United States must fall - even if China leads the international order. It’s why it's an existential war for Israel. It's was big risk - one that has left Israel isolated from the United States itself. I mean - at some point, those who run the United States must wake up and understand that the United States' descent into authoritarianism, which is very likely the fall of democracy - though, human civilization will continue because where the United States is failing, #BRICS will lead. However, that puts at risk the future of its nation, and its people who will suffer. From this point - their partnership has reached a breaking point. Good - a day that brings a glimpse of hope for the United States of America and the democracies of the world. Plus - its the democracy that best protect #Jewish lives today and for all the tomorrow’s to come.
I will never understand how you care more about money and status than stopping your involvement with bombing, burning and starving children. I have stayed at stunning five-star hotels, eaten at superb Michelin rated restaurants and gone to magnificent Broadway shows. Not a single resort, menu or musical act is worth co-signing this horror. What tastes and feels so good to you silent monsters that you’ve found yourselves participating in a Holocaust of babies?

In 2007, Joshua Bell, one of the world's most renowned violinists, took his prized Stradivarius violin worth 3.5 million dollars to a Washington D.C. subway station. He was dressed casually and unassumingly, blending in with the bustling commuters who passed him by without a second glance. He began playing one of the most intricate pieces ever written, but the commuters rushed by, barely sparing him a glance. Despite his immense talent and the value of his instrument, only a handful of people stopped to listen. It was a stark contrast to the previous night when he had performed in a Boston theatre, selling out seats at an average of $100 each. The experiment aimed to illustrate an important lesson about the perception of value. Something that may be invaluable in one context may be ignored or undervalued in another. This lesson extends to businesses and their offerings - no matter how great their products or services are, they need to be perceived as valuable in order to succeed. The key lies in effective branding and marketing that can shape the perception of value. #Rudra #Diamonds #MarketingLessons #PerceivedValue #Branding #CreativeMarketing #BusinessTips #JoshuaBellExperiment #BrandValue #AuthenticMarketing #BrandStrategy #EffectiveCommunication

Professor Theater Management/ Theater Researcher at University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt/Main
That's true, many North American Performing Arts organizations and companies are years ahead of most of the European organizations in reflecting the aspects Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). They address racial injustice, gender disparity, and ableism, as well as discrimination and power abuse more serious and with more financial power. We should take this as an example in order to quickly catch up on these aspects and not always be years behind, as with #metoo a.o.
Opera America are doing brilliant work reflecting on Racial Justice within the industry both within the US and further afield. They will be hosting another two day forum this coming March. Really looking forward to being part of it and joining one of my all time favourites (Quo Johnson) in conversation on March 7th at 1:15pm.

How often do we walk the road to Damascus How often have we experienced an epiphany along our journey. Are we capable of understanding such sudden and great revelations. How often have we just thought it was a figment of our imagination. How sometimes we think we have every answer, so wrong. How our paradigm prevents risk to discover more. How determined are we to search the truth, or merely follow vanity thinking we know best. Whether we enjoy the circus or opera, life of acceptance is still the same. Accept that there are different formula's and equations. If the gift of suggestion is offered then you need to discover its source. Consider all options. GWW.

Recovering Public Servant. Stakeholder engagement. Curious person. Facilitation. Futures Thinking. Training & Development.
**Engagement is Like Conducting a Choir** 1. **Listening and Understanding**: A great conductor listens carefully to each voice and understands its strengths. Similarly, effective engagement requires listening to and understanding the unique perspectives and contributions of each participant. 2. **Inclusivity**: Every voice in the choir matters, from the sopranos to the basses. Engagement should be inclusive, valuing the input of all stakeholders and ensuring everyone feels heard and appreciated. 3. **Adaptability**: A conductor adjusts the tempo and dynamics based on the choir's performance. Effective engagement requires adaptability, being open to feedback, and making adjustments as needed to keep everyone motivated and on track. PS: I’m offering a “love letter” to Vox Camerata for their upcoming performance - “Musica Intimae: Us, Them, and Other Love Stories” They are the lovely folks in this photo, led by Shahril Salleh (PhD) Join us: Matinee Tickets (3:30pm to 5:00pm): https://buff.ly/3VKN8Rw Gala Tickets (7:30pm to 9:00pm): https://buff.ly/3VMELES
