Spot the cruise ships! Very fortunate to have been able to spend the week in Miami attending Seatrade Global (as well as a little R&R afterwards). Key takeaways include the following: 1. Sentiment is overwhelmingly positive amongst the major cruise operators. 2. Unprecedented demand for cruising, with 2025 predicted to be even stronger. This is not “pent-up” demand from the pandemic and is simply reflective of current demand. This certainly seems to play out when looking at the Miami cruise traffic over the weekend (the photo below shows vessels belonging to all four of the major operators). 3. 56 new ships to be delivered by the end of 2028, with more on order and expected to be ordered. 4. Sustainability is at the forefront of the industry but the availability of viable and scalable “green fuels” at a competitive price will be key. This is a consistent message across all sub-sectors of the shipping industry. 5. Cruise had a global impact of around $137bn in 2022 and this number is expected to rise considerably over the next few years. It is therefore a truly global industry. #Seatrade #Cruise #Miami

Let’s sum up the first three months! ✈️😀 Significant growth in charter passenger figures for the first quarter (from 5 307 to 7 703). 👉 45 % 📈 This clearly shows that the tour operators' investment in the Jönköping region, with a double weekly departure to Gran Canaria was the right choice. ☀️ On the downside, we see a slightly drop in cargo volumes from January to March. 📉 The amount of freight handled decreased from 808 to 787 tons, which corresponds to 3 percent less than the same period last year. Carnival Corporation faces a $10M impact as cruises shift from Baltimore, affecting earnings and rerouting cruises. Passengers on affected cruises are being transported back to Baltimore from a temporary homeport in Norfolk. Sister ships will take over homeport operations in Baltimore to ensure continuity. Other cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean and American Cruise Lines, are also exploring alternatives for their operations. CRUISES BOOMING: PortMiami’s cruise passenger totals rose 9% from October through January compared to the same period the prior fiscal year, Fitch Ratings noted in rating port bond issues. Last fiscal year the port recorded 7.3 million passenger moves – which total both ship boardings and departures of those passengers – compared with 6.8 million in 2019, before covid decimated the cruise industry. Port management expects more than 7 million passenger movements this year as totals rise to over 9.4 million by fiscal year 2028. This week the Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) announced a historic passenger volume of over 2.4 million passengers served in Calendar Year 2023, representing a more than 12% increase compared to Calendar Year 2022, which served 2.1 million passengers. In addition to strong passenger growth, construction on a major and historic terminal expansion is in process to meet current and future travel demands for California’s Central Valley. Solid international passenger volumes continue to outpace prior years. In 2023, a total of 322,922 passengers traveled between Fresno Yosemite International Airport and Mexico, representing a nearly 4% increase compared to 2022. BREAKING NEWS: For the second year in a row, Florida’s system of seaports experienced record-high cargo growth and set a new record-high number of cruise passenger embarkations, a new report from the FSTED shows. For 2023, Florida’s seaports handled 114.25 million tons of cargo, shattering the 2022 record-high 112.5 million tons of cargo moved. Plus, 19.4 million cruise passengers set out on embarkations. CRUISES RIDING HIGH: Seven Florida ports counted 19.4 million cruise passengers last year, topping the previous record by more than 1 million people. That record was set in 2019, the last full year before the pandemic temporarily shut down the cruise industry. After the pandemic cut cruise passenger numbers in Florida to 747,488 in 2021, before increasing to 10.8 million passengers as the industry started to rebound in 2022, PortMiami, Port Canaveral and Port Everglades are the top three cruise home ports in the world. Royal Caribbean shares key news on its plans to go small   The cruise line has very slowly shared information on its plans to build what it's calling "Discovery-class" ships.   I think its my inner old Italian grandma, but it hasn’t been a surprise when talking about Disney Cruise Line that I prefer the older, smaller ships.   Now I am not sure this should be the only driver for the smaller ships, but it certainly helps: "It's more about where those ships can go. It's getting them into maybe some of the more unique and bespoke destinations to further diversify our footprint around the world."
