I attended a Board Leadership Forum hosted by Equilar and Nasdaq where we explored the significant transformations underway within corporations. Our discussions encompassed various aspects, including the opportunities and threats arising from AI, cybersecurity, capital markets, geopolitics, and human capital. At the forum, I offered a different perspective on the board's role in predicting risk, emphasizing its value. For instance, while it may not have been possible to predict COVID-19 with pinpoint accuracy, with humility, we can draw lessons from past events like SARS in Asia to consider the implications of measures such as public space closures. This reflection could prompt a reassessment of risk in sectors like the cruise industry and the identification of potential near-term opportunities in home fitness companies, such as bike fitness, in response to evolving consumer behavior. Through asking management insightful questions, practicing humility, and maintaining an open-minded approach, I am confident that board directors can play a crucial role in both mitigating and predicting risks.
