It's graduation season! Here are some things to think about if you are revising your dissertation into a book. And, frankly, it's always good to remind yourself of what a book looks like! This post has some questions to consider and exercises to work through to check that your book is actually a book! Happy writing and thinking!
As an editor, one of the biggest challenges I see writers face as they work to revise their dissertations into books is just wrapping their heads around the major differences between these genres. This is especially challenging since authors have been buried so deep in the dissertation for so long: it’s hard to even see it anymore, let alone to evaluate whether it’s book-like. So in this blog post I explore three major characteristics of books that dissertations often don’t have: books (ideally!) have overarching arguments, their chapters build on each other, and they speak to well-defined audiences. The good news is that if you spend time reflecting on these issues you have a much better chance of writing a book that will do justice to your research, be meaningful to yourself and others, and that publishers will want to publish! My post has a fuller discussion of these three areas as well as questions and exercises that you can work through to help you think through them. Happy writing and thinking! https://lnkd.in/eJR58a-f #academicwriting #scholarlywriting #writingtips #dissertations

These are all great tips, not just for reducing your word count but also for being direct and succinct in scientific writing.

Exceeding the word limit in your manuscript? As an academic writing coach, here are my 7 top strategies that help you reduce your word count. #1: Have a clearly defined central message that runs through the WHOLE manuscript 🧵 Check each figure panel, each subsection, each paragraph and each sentence to make sure they're aligned with your central message. — #2: Present your information concisely 🧹 Make sure you aren't repeating information in your manuscript, such as sharing background information on your research topic BOTH in your Introduction AND Discussion section. — #3: Cut repetitive sentences ✂️ Go through each sentence and remove redundant ones repeating information already shared. The goal is for each sentence to present new information in the most precise way. — #4: Eliminate filler words 🫧 Remove any words that don't carry additional meaning, e.g. using "could" and "likely" in the same sentence. — #5: Swap nouns for verbs ↔️ Check your draft for nouns that could be replaced by a verb. For example, instead of "we present an analysis of...", write "we analysed..." and save 3 words just like that. This will make your text easier to read too! — #6: Kill conjunctions 🌉 Not every sentence needs to start with a "furthermore", "also", "while" etc. Make sure your writing flows and fewer conjunctions will be needed. — #7: Use parentheses wisely ✅ When listing numerous parameters of several samples, condense the information into one sentence using parentheses. For example, write "the weight of sample X(Y) was 5.8g (4.2g) at 150°C and 5.0g (3.6g) at 250°C". — TL;DR - 7 strategies to ✂️ cut your word count (& improve your writing!) #1: Have a clearly defined central message #2: Implement a consistent structure #3: Cut repetitive sentences #4: Eliminate filler words #5: Swap nouns for verbs #6: Kill conjunctions #7: Use parentheses #AcademicWriting #ScientificWriting If you liked this thread, please: 👩💻Watch my free video training on how to write scientific papers faster and actually get them published in your target journals 👇

My 4-week academic paper writing timeline (and how to stick to it) 👇🏻 As an academic, I know how frustrating it can be to pour your heart and soul into a research paper, only to have it languish in the peer review process for months on end. The good news? It doesn't have to be this way. In the paper writing workshop I run nearly a year ago, I shared a detailed 4-week timeline that has helped me and my students consistently publish high-quality papers, even with busy schedules. The key is all in the planning. By breaking down the writing process into manageable daily tasks, setting strict deadlines, and leveraging smart productivity hacks, you can go from idea to submitted paper in under a month. Here's a quick overview of the 4-week timeline: Week 1: Develop a crystal-clear outline - this gives you a structured blueprint to follow. Weeks 2-3: Focused writing in short 2-3 hour bursts, tackling one section at a time (methods, results, discussion). Week 4: Final edits, citations, formatting, and submission. The real power comes from sticking to the schedule, even on the days you don't feel like writing. Want to see the full timeline with daily tasks? Let me know in the comments, and I'll be happy to share the recording. Wishing you all the best in your academic publishing journey! #Publishing #PhD #Research #AcademicWriting #Writing
