🌟 Honored to have been invited as a panel member for a transformative youth discussion on health policy, climate action, and youth engagement in governance! 🌍 Representing both India 🇮🇳 and Armenia 🇦🇲, This exhilarating event brought together brilliant young minds from across the globe, fostering an inclusive space for insightful discussions on crucial matters of youth leadership and democracy. Our dialogue was a captivating exchange of ideas, where passionate voices united to shape a more inclusive and equitable world. From empowering youth voices to shaping impactful policies, every contribution mattered in shaping a draft to be presented at UN-YC which will impact generations to come. It was an invaluable opportunity to empower future young leaders, recognizing their potential to create positive change and shape the future. Together, we explored innovative approaches to fostering youth leadership and strengthening democratic values, paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future. 💡 I personally advocate the continuation of extensive collaboration to inspire change. Our collective efforts pave the way for a healthier, more sustainable world. South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) and ActionAid Bangladesh are conducting ongoing studies to assess the vulnerabilities faced by young people in Bangladesh, including limited access to public services, education, democratic spaces, and issues related to disabilities. These studies involve both qualitative and quantitative data collection, including surveys and desk research. The goal is to generate advocacy evidence to influence the national government and relevant ministries to allocate adequate budgets for addressing youth vulnerability and fragility. This includes areas such as resilience, livelihood, climate-induced migration, social deviance, education, and health. The findings and recommendations from these studies will be shared with various stakeholders, including government representatives, CSOs, and young people, through presentations and round table discussions. SANEM and ActionAid Bangladesh aim to publish a policy brief to advocate for youth-sensitive policies and resource allocation.   The objectives of this initiative are to facilitate a substantive dialogue among pertinent stakeholders regarding the primary vulnerabilities faced by young people and the incorporation of youth-sensitive elements within the national budget. This includes an assessment of key government policies and the level of youth-centric consideration within the 2023-24 national budget. Additionally, the initiative seeks to gather a wide range of opinions and recommendations from various relevant stakeholders to strengthen youth advocacy efforts.   In this context, SANEM and ActionAid Bangladesh will host a round table discussion titled “Addressing the Vulnerability and Fragility of Youth in Bangladesh” to be held on 4 October 2023 from 10:00 AM to 01:00 PM at Hotel Amari Dhaka. Today, I had the privilege of speaking at Anambra Broadcasting Service about a topic that is incredibly close to my heart: "The Future; Youth in Governance." In a world facing rapid changes and unprecedented challenges, the role of young people in governance is more critical than ever. Our youth represent a wellspring of innovation, creativity, and resilience. They are not just future leaders but are leaders of today, poised to drive sustainable and inclusive development.At the event, we explored how engaging young people in governance can turn the demographic shift into a demographic dividend. We discussed the importance of policy reforms that facilitate youth participation, the need for educational and capacity-building programs, and the powerful role of technology and social media in amplifying youth voices. Despite the clear benefits, we must acknowledge the barriers that young people face, from systemic resistance to lack of resources and political instability. However, by creating supportive environments, fostering dialogue, and providing platforms for youth engagement, we can overcome these challenges. Success stories from around the world, such as Tunisia's youth quotas and Rwanda's youth parliament, highlight the transformative impact of youth involvement in governance. These examples inspire hope and demonstrate that when given the opportunity, young people can lead and innovate effectively. As I concluded my talk, I emphasized that the future of governance lies in embracing the energy, creativity, and commitment of our youth. By investing in their potential and integrating their perspectives into decision-making processes, we can build more resilient and inclusive societies.Let's work together to ensure that today's youth are equipped, empowered, and ready to shape a better tomorrow. At the age of 25, someone here is a happy uncle—I won’t talk about those who are already grandparents before 30. It’s that real. You’ve got to admire our production rate😎 Africa has the world's youngest population, with over 400 million individuals aged between 15 and 35. By 2030, young Africans are projected to constitute 42% of the global youth demographic. In 🇺🇬 alone, children under 18 are half the total population (50.5%), with 18 to 30-year-olds accounting for 22.7%—🤨 Anyway, let’s see if there are solutions, sustainable approaches before this young continent freezes in debt and dilemma. How can approaches like Social and Behavior Change (SBC) empower this dynamic youth demographic to overcome challenges and seize opportunities for societal development? Look, for the millions of graduates every year, the “What’s Next” question is still an everyday bread—navigating opportunities amidst societal barriers remains a challenge, leading to uncertainty and frustration. ⁉️How can we foster an enabling environment where African youth can thrive? Thrilled to share insights from our recent meeting with M A Akher Sir, Director (Planning), and the esteemed team at the Department of Youth Development, Ministry of Youth and Sports! We delved into the crucial role of youth participation in policy-making and the ongoing review of National Youth Policy 2017 to drive sustainable change, aligning with Vision 2021, Vision 2041, and the UN-adopted Sustainable Development Goals (2016-30). 🌍 At The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), we firmly believe that there's no alternative to ensuring the active involvement of youth, the most creative and enterprising among us, at local, national, and international levels. Youth perspectives are invaluable in shaping policies that resonate with diverse social perspectives and pave the way for a brighter future. Our passion lies in empowering youth voices and fostering meaningful engagement in development and policy processes. To maximize their potential and secure their position as effective human resources, it's imperative to prioritize their well-being. This includes ensuring access to good health and healthier diets, as well as facilitating their participation in policy discussions to ensure inclusivity and representation at the decision-making table. We are grateful to M A Akher, sir, for insightful thoughts and guidance to make the policy more meaningful for youth. 📌 'There's nothing for youth without the youth' 📌 STENGTHENING YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN KEY DECISION MAKING PROCESSES The key question of the webinar was: How can the youth be empowered to be decision makers and challenge decision-making processes? Here are some facts about the youth. The Youth: - Have the biggest percantage of our population in Africa, with a 70 percantage. - Have amazing innovative ideas - Are the most energetic population. - Are often politically, economically and socially excluded from the society. - Are at a high risk of radicalization - Have close proximity to violent extremism and conflict. Youths should therefore be mentored through societal investment on intergenerational relationships. The motivating factory behind it being, 'those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it'. We should strive to change the unhealthy cycles that have been incorporated in various periods in time, in society. Here are 4 degrees of Youth Engagement - Youth consulted - Youth contributing - Youth as partners - Youth as leaders The heart it the webinar and my key take away was: Don't be a jack of all trades and master of none, single out one problem you want to solve, align with it with the SDGs and persue it. Which one problem are you striving to solve?

Attending the Centre for the Study of African Economies, University of Oxford #OxCSAE2024 was an enriching experience, catching up with colleagues and friends like Oluwabunmi Adejumo and Queen Esther Oye, PhD. Presenting my research and receiving insightful feedback was truly invaluable (see attachment for the presentation). Our research (co-authored by Joseph Ajefu, Ph.D, FHEA) yielded a fascinating finding: IDP settlements contribute to improved health outcomes for children in the host community. For instance, we observed a significant 10 percentage point decrease in the likelihood of underweight, stunted, or wasted conditions among host community children, particularly those residing within a 10-km radius of the IDP settlements. The effect diminishes for cohort children residing within 25km, 50km, and so forth from the IDP settlements. You may be wondering—how can this be? Conventional wisdom suggests that IDP settlements could have adverse effects on the wellbeing of host community children due to various factors, including strains on health services caused by population shocks, among others. Now, let's delve into the mechanisms driving this result, as verified by our study. Firstly, the influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) led to changes in food prices, likely driven by increased demand for food. As a response, women from host communities intensified their agricultural production, prioritizing it over other labour engagements to capitalize on the opportunity to expand household resources. Secondly, the heightened aid flow, particularly health-related aid such as increased vaccination campaigns in host communities, has also benefitted children from these locations due to the presence of IDP settlements. Our paper challenges conventional wisdom and underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of the complexities inherent in the relationship between the influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host community outcomes. By uncovering the mechanisms driving these unexpected health improvements, our study also offers actionable knowledge that can inform both policy decisions and academic inquiries, ultimately aiming to improve the well-being of vulnerable populations particularly in LMICs. In the nearest future we will be updating this post with the peer-reviewed published version of the paper. Stay tuned.
