My military background and the myriad of challenging jobs I've tackled assured me that I had what it takes to lead the premier exterior property washing and detailing company in Southeastern Wisconsin. 🏗️ From humble beginnings as a residential cleaning service, we've expanded into the industrial and commercial sectors, proving that success isn't solely the domain of four-year college graduates. The Story of the Grateful Starfishes One morning, an elderly man was walking along the beach when he noticed a young boy picking something off the sand and throwing it into the sea.   As he got closer, the man realized the child was throwing stranded starfishes that had washed up on the shore back into the breaking waves. Approaching the boy, the man asked what he was doing.   “The starfish will die if they’re still on the shore when the sun rises,” he replied.   Perplexed, the old man said, “But that’s pointless! There are countless miles of beach and thousands of starfish. It doesn’t matter how many you return to the water, you can’t make a difference.”   Unfazed, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and tossed it into the sea.“It matters to this one,” he said.   Moral of the story:   No matter the odds of success or the scale of the challenge, your actions can make a difference. It’s better to light a candle than curse the dark.  Every little counts. Doing something to make a positive change is always better than nothing! When thinking our life dreams and the challenges we are experiencing, not many will help carry our burdens and offer foreseeable solutions. As has probably been apparent from my lack of content on here in the last month, being at the coalface of two businesses has been a bit of an (enjoyable) adjustment. A few things I've learned so far: The busier you are, the more efficient you become. Most business owners will understand the feeling of stressing the small stuff on a daily basis and taking way too long to come decisions on relatively mundane matters. When you have no time to do this, you make decisions quickly and clearly and move forward at a higher rate of knots. More activity has not equalled more stress, in fact, the opposite has been true. The labour shortage is more complex than it seems. We've had an enormous amount of applicants for every job we've advertised (we had 104 applicants for a bar job), but frighteningly few of those applicants had any relevant experience, the right attitude or the right expectations of the job. This is really worrying long term; not for our businesses necessarily, but for the country as a whole. The experience element is fair enough, everybody needs to get a start somewhere, but the attitude towards work from the (largely) younger applicants has been eye opening and is possibly a larger element of the labour shortage issue than I realised. Running a family business and a non family business is not as different as I'd imagined. Very quickly, the team at Our House bar has assumed a family sort of vibe and the team meetings and conversations that we have on shift really aren't that different to the internal workings at Sibling. I think this is a lot to do with our manager (Simeon) really buying into our vision, throwing himself into it whole heartedly, and partly because we can't help but keep things light hearted. This approach relies on having the right personnel for sure, but it's something that I hope we can continue as we grow the new business. As we move into the quieter part of the year, I'm optimistic about the coming 12 months. We are already enjoying planning our first Gloucester based events (First event "New Year, New World Wine", at the end of this month) as well as planning the first new Sibling product release of the year, which has been a *really* long time coming. There is a lot to be excited about and I will do my best to keep on top of LinkedIn posting!

The era of chasing wealth is over. It’s just not the goal anymore. And I love it. Why? Because we are tired of trading our lives for money. → Tired of launching new income streams → Tired of optimizing every single thing → Tired of leaving workplaces we love → Tired of never having enough So we are saying "no" to one silly dream. And chasing much bigger ones… → Acres of space to run free → Time with our families → Lives we love → Peace We are trading Notion pages full of new business designs. For Moleskines full of wild trip ideas for our families. Armed with nothing but a realization that we'll never get these years back. We are no longer content stacking dollars for an uncertain future. We are having too much fun finally living for today.

There is one thing I wish was different about Oceans. One thing I sometimes regret. This photo was taken in my hometown, it's the window of the gas station. As I was filling up my car, I saw something I didn't expect to see. My friend Brooks Powell 🍻's company Cheers! How crazy that this startup's awesome product had made it to my small town's gas station. I texted Brook's immediately with this picture, but then felt a little sad. For everything Oceans does, for all the growth, the happiness and hardship, we sell SERVICES. We don't actually make any products. The truth is, I've always been jealous of people who start companies which make physical things. It must be so cool to find this stuff in the wild! Until the day Oceans pivots to manufacturing beach toys, it's not something I'll ever be able to experience. Having talk to Brooks about his business, I know how hard it is and how hard he and his team have worked so that these two little boxes can show up in the middle of nowhere Vermont. I'm sure he is jealous of me for not having to deal with the headaches that come with making stuff. It's a good reminder that every company, no matter what it does, will always have the good and the bad. And that's where my mind ultimately settled. There will always be someone doing something else that looks cooler. Focus on the avenues that present themselves to you and most importantly, be okay with the things you did not pursue.

Maintaining a grassy field takes a lot of effort, and it’s pretty much only good for cows. But look at that bushland – it’s chaotic, yet beautiful and easier to maintain in some ways. Sure, it’s unpredictable, but isn’t life like that too? Most people try to run their businesses like that grassy field – predictable and hard work, but only serving one type of need. If that’s your goal, go for it. But I think there’s something special about embracing the chaos. It’s more fun, prettier, and serves a variety of needs – just like humans enjoy variety in their lives. Makes you think, right? How do you run your business? Drop your thoughts below!
