Reflecting on #AFSIC in London (9-10 October) - the energy about Africa's opportunities was palpable. #Fintech is my own 'wheelhouse' and is continuing to see continued VC investment (apparently VC funding still growing by >25%). Valuations are more realistic, and I'm pleased to see the ICO bubble has burst. Investors are interested more on good route-to-market and distribution partnerships than pure innovation. Traction metrics are early-stage KPI's, and African countries have large populations that should provide good test-beds to assess product-market fit. Some valid concerns exist about the quality of governance, which should be the focus of the senior team for all start-ups once they get post-revenue. I'm also seeing some patience from investors with the time it takes to get to viability, and the resilience needed by #founders. I presented some information about the progress made by our MinitMoney remittance service, and out mission to help people get money home quickly and affordably.

💸 A Win for Diversity in Funding Networks 💸 As a female co-founder in the FinTech space, I was frustrated and saddened to learn about the updated Financial Promotions Order in the UK and its negative impact on the diversity for both startups and investors. …however, I am delighted to start the week with some good news! The HM Treasury plans to reverse the changes made to angel investment rules and the HNWI threshold. These changes will continue to allow angel investment, particularly female and underrepresented founders, to flow. A huge thank you to all those involved in applying pressure and pushing for change - the female founders & investors and the vast number of campaigns created to ensure diversity in our landscape can continue to flourish. #levenue #womenintech #diversity #investing #angelinvestors #fintech #femalefounders

The UK FinTech (VC) funding environment continues to be hugely challenging. Here are three take-aways from conversations I’ve had with founders this year: ◽️Sentiment is slightly more positive for earlier stage. This end of the market can be more buoyant in these conditions. Some are delaying the decision to bring a VC onto the cap table, and instead either bootstrapping for longer, or focusing on Angels. This could be a good outcome for many of these companies. ◽️For Series A and beyond, sentiment is less positive. Interesting stat: 40% of the companies who raised at Series A in 2021 are still looking for their next round of funding. Many reasons prevail, but a key theme is that many VCs are protecting their existing portfolio companies. Founders are stretching themselves even more out of the UK market, which can be very challenging. ◻️ The regulatory compliance roadmap continues to be a major risk for many founders. There continues to be lots of uncertainty on where the FCA may go in a number of areas. This is either impacting growth plans (AI being a key one) and/or making cost assumptions more challenging. #fintech #ukfintech #financialservices #innovation #founders #compliance

Is there anything I can do for you? I have now worked three years at a German fintech unicorn where we during these three years more than doubled the business to over 55 billion EUR AuA - and I recently read a sentence that one of my colleagues there wrote about me - and it was this sentence; “always helpful, courteous, and if necessary, she put the interests of others before her own”. Now this is amazing, and I could not be prouder that my colleagues think of me this way – but it is not entirely true. Or; there is no “I” in “T-E-A-M”. For me the best days is when we won, my team and I, and it does not matter which one of us who kicked the soccer-ball in our business strategy in the field for coming up to the goal - or which one of us kicked the last kick that went in the net. We did it together – and that is what matters. When I read this sentence above – it reminded me of another very happy moment; and that was when my colleagues at the largest Norwegian bank, DNB, voted for me as the person who helped them the most succeed with their business – and I won (again with them) – we won.
