"In the 1526 singles matches I've played in my career, I've won almost 80% of the matches.
But points, only 54%; in other words, I've won just barely over half the points I've played" - Roger Federer's brilliant commencement speech at Dartmouth
It's the fine margins that forge legends. If you aren't missing every other shot you take, then it's time to push a little closer to the edge

Tennis Lessons from admiration: 🎾 🎓
1. Effortless is a Myth: You have to work very hard to make it look easy 💪
- To enhance your game and expand your options, you need a full arsenal of strengths, ensuring you have a backup if one fails. 🛠️
- The victories we can be most proud of are those that prove you can win not just when you are at your best, but especially when you aren't. 🏆
- Some people are born with talents, but everybody has to work on them🏋️
- Yes, talent matters, but it has a broad definition. It’s not just about the gift but also about having grit. Talent includes discipline, patience, trusting yourself, embracing the process, and managing your life and yourself. 🌟
2. It's Only a Point:
- Perfection is impossible - “In the 1526 singles matches I've played in my career; I've won almost 80% of the matches. But points, only 54%; in other words, I've won just barely over half the points I've played" - Roger Federer 🎾
- When you lose every second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot. 🧠
- While playing for a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world. But when it's behind you, it's behind you.
- The best in the world is not the best because they win every single point. It’s because they know they will lose again and again and have learned how to deal with it. 🌟
3. Life is Bigger Than the Court:
- Your job could show you the world, but it could never be the world. 🌍
- It is important to have a life full of travel, culture, friendships, and especially family. 👨👩👧👦
- Never abandon your roots, never forget where you come from, but also never lose the appetite to see the big world. 🌎

Building #Wearescience. A non-scientist with a new Philosophy and Sociology of Science. TRAINER of Conversational Science Communication for Science for Personal and Professional life.
" Like most speeches, quite useless.
However, his presence is a prize given to those who graduated.
Words may still hold some value but unlikely.
Value comes from the values that built your body ( genetics) and the values played out everyday in the first 20 years of your life ( #epigenetics).
And these 20 years might have been valuable enough to have taught you how to be a #lifelonglearner
and
made you into a person to pursue #lifelonglearning in
everything ,
everyday
and
everyone .
This speech, will be a strong moment for days or years to come? Very unlikely, because, when you live your life, this speech will not play a part, for that moment , or other moments.
However, You will enjoy thinking about it. Again, mostly, because, its part of your graduation.
What he said ? You already know.
Never thought about it but basic education is useful and you may criticise school but it does a good job in covering everything you need to know. Hence, his words will not hold too many surprises.
Thinking - with a broad humanist and #scientificremper ( #Nehru ) - is a requirement - for you to appreciate yourself, others, all things, all matter , mass and non mass.
Your rituals and scriptures will not capture the essence of life's #Biology, #Chemistry and #physics.
Your humanity will and that is what most scriptures say anyway.
Your humanity matters, not points, tennis or Roger Federer's useless profession .
Your #values , your neighbour's values and every single entity in all physics chemistry matters.
Only #science , #knowledge , #empathy, #learning matters and #understanding matters. "

My personal addition to this is 1) enjoy the journey 2) keep learning, growing and developing, 3) above all, keep trying - stay in the game!

Let me add some more interesting stats to further the point of the quoted post.
We all know Big 3 in tennis (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer). Let's look at their points win percentage from 2015-2019 (the last time when all 3 were in their prime at the same time).
Novak Djokovic = 54.95%
Rafael Nadal = 54.73%
Roger Federer = 54.54%
Now, let's consider Richard Gasquet, undoubtedly a tennis great in his own right with 16 titles and a career-high rank of 7. His career win percentage? A remarkably competitive ~52%. This mere 2% difference illustrates the fine line between an all-time great career and a distinguished one.
The second example would be the Wimbledon 2019 final between Djokovic and Federer. Federer lost the match even though he ended up winning 14 more points than Novak.
In tennis, as in life, every point counts but some points weigh more than others. It's a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence and the ability to capitalize on opportunities that define outcomes.

The best lesson for managing everything in life, detachment is the best way to manage disappointments and also to avoid pride.
This is the secret of staying focused and of practising neutrality.
