The Asia Global Institute (AGI) at HKU is proud to introduce this year’s Fellows of its signature initiative, the AsiaGlobal Fellows (AGF) Program. The 17 fellows are catalysts of change in their own fields and include, inter alia, a parliament member of a Middle East country, the chairperson of a national art council in Africa, and a champion of social justice and mental health using technology for the wider good in ASEAN. The fellows have arrived at HKU and have begun a 13-week journey, which includes study trips to Mainland China and Indonesia. Now in its eighth year, the AGF Program has nurtured 91 fellows from 54 countries. They participate in various activities in Hong Kong and the Asian region, and will be better informed and prepared to navigate Asia's complex and rapidly evolving developments, thereby promoting a shared, prosperous, and sustainable future. Women’s political leadership “can make a difference.” It can improve policy outcomes. This were some of the take-aways of the World Bank’s recent seminar on women’s political leadership. Former President Michelle Bachelet framed the seminar with great insights and pragmatism, and provided excellent concrete ideas as well as broad inspiration for expanding World Bank support in client countries to advance women’s leadership. We discussed how women’s political leadership can inspire future generations of female leaders. How it may create a virtuous cycle of women’s political leadership and gender quality, including women’s economic participation and foundational wellbeing. But the backlash against women’s leadership, including violence against women political leaders, is real. And it is not fully understood. We discussed promising interventions (some of them already supported by evidence), including: • gender quotas as an effective mechanism to propel women into leadership positions. Evidence shows that women who win elections in local government bodies through quotas have a higher chance of winning subsequent elections without a quota. • career progression pathways such as performance- and merit-based promotions — hence, activities to foster inclusive pipelines for leadership positions such as leadership training, capacity building, mentoring, and network building. • measures to support cultural change (combat stereotypes, biases, and norms; and shift mindsets); and address violence against women in leadership, incl. on social media. This requires, for example, better understanding of the backlash. The seminar concluded that advancing women’s political leadership is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. The World Bank can further support countries in advancing women’s leadership by mobilizing a concerted action through data, knowledge and advocacy with partners; and by assisting in evidence-based pragmatic institutional and policy reforms and programs. The Green South Alliance Energy Transition Meet on August 1, 2024, at the Taj Mahal Hotel, Delhi, united global leaders to drive transformative change for a sustainable future. The event, spearheaded by Swaniti Global, focused on enhancing access to technology, finance, and expertise for a timely and inclusive energy transition. Key discussions emphasized regional cooperation, leveraging legislative interventions, and adopting best practices tailored to the Global South's unique contexts. We wholeheartedly thank Shri Shripad Yesso Naik , Hon’ble Minister of State of New and Renewable Energy, and Power, Government of India for commencing the discussion and emphasizing the need for the Global South nations to unite in promoting time-bound energy transition.
