🇯🇵 Japan has started labelling the GHG and Biodiversity impact of some foods, in an initiative introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan. The new labels will use a star rating system, 1-3, with the stars representing the reduction of greenhouse gases or preservation of biodiversity. Higher reduction or preservation means more stars. To start, the initiative will cover 23 products, including rice, tomatoes & cucumbers. This is one of the first attempts I have seen to integrate biodiversity into consumer labelling - though it faces the perennial challenge of all consumer labels: oversimplification of complex issues. Avocados - sometimes called "green gold" - are often seen as symbol of landscape degradation. Indeed, rising demand for avocados in recent years has led to water depletion and deforestation in Mexico. The Rainforest Alliance, Commonland's partner through 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People, has been working with small-scale producers in Mexico to manage orchards sustainably. Combining a landscape finance assessment designed by the 1000L initiative and data collected through LandScale, has revealed potential funding opportunities. This information is being used to design a portfolio of potential projects that can be funded to support sustainable agriculture. This could enable investments that boost the technical capacity of small-scale producers to operate more sustainably while considering impacts to the landscape as a whole. "Veganic growing may be the most important step to ensure that we break the chain of animal agriculture in our farming system. Soil life can flourish by minimizing tillage, not using toxic manure, and eliminating the spraying of harmful herbicides or insecticides. When spraying of toxic chemicals is eliminated, predatory insects will corral crop-damaging insects, and plants will build immunity and defense mechanisms. It is what happens in the wild grasslands and forests and will occur in our gardens and farms if this process is allowed to take place in these spaces. By using plant-based composts, cover crops (green manures), and keeping the ground covered with plant material and living roots holding the soil, the Earth will constantly regenerate. Species determined to be threatened can thrive in our garden and farm spaces, specifically insects, bees, butterflies, birds, and small mammals. In the quest to understand how to grow our food best, it is imperative that we seek to cultivate as much as possible in the least amount of space. Based on my experience of running a farm, I have already analyzed that veganic farming can be 3 percent and 41 percent more productive than conventional and organic agriculture, respectively. But even more compelling is the fact that the veganic way is more than 4,000 percent more productive than raising animals acre per acre." https://lnkd.in/e3wWVXBH

Agroecology: Challenges and Prospects As an agronomist and environmentalist, I see agroecology as the path to sustainable, resilient agriculture. Faced with the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security, it proposes a holistic approach inspired by ecology for more efficient and environmentally friendly farming systems. The shared image illustrates the 13 principles of agroecology that agricultural councils can apply. 1. Recycling and reducing inputs: Reduce the use of chemicals and promote the recycling of bio-waste to preserve soil and ecosystem health. 2. Soil health: Encourage farming practices that promote biological fertility and soil structure for better agricultural production. 3. Biodiversity: Promote crop and habitat diversification to encourage the presence of pollinating insects and other natural benefits. 4. Animal welfare: Ensure animal welfare-friendly farming conditions and limit the use of antibiotics. 5. Synergy: Valorize interactions between elements of the farming system to optimize production and reduce environmental impact. 6. Economic diversification: Encourage farmers to diversify their production and sources of income for greater economic resilience. 7. Knowledge co-creation: Fostering collaboration between farmers, researchers, and agricultural stakeholders to develop innovative solutions adapted to local contexts. 8. Sustainable governance of land and natural resources: Promote sustainable management to ensure long-term survival. 9. Social values and food: Encouraging healthy, sustainable food and farming practices that respect social and cultural values. 10. Equity: Ensure equitable access to agricultural resources and services for all, including smallholders and marginalized populations. 11. Connectivity: Promote the creation of ecological corridors and connectivity between habitats to maintain biodiversity and ecosystem services. 12. Participation: Involve citizens and stakeholders in decision-making concerning agriculture and food. 13. Recycling: Promote the closed nutrient loop by recovering bio-waste and reducing food waste. As agricultural advisors, we have a crucial role in helping farmers transition to agroecological practices. By disseminating knowledge and encouraging the adoption of these principles, we can build a more sustainable and resilient agriculture for future generations. Bees, beans and sustainability! The sheer magnitude of work carried out by bees is magnificent and it makes them an inseparable part of coffee plantations. As pollinators, they help to preserve the quality and flavor of coffee beans. This aspect of integrated farming always fascinates me. While the majority of coffee production is managed by our people, bees deserve to be credited for pollinating some of the rich varieties. The health of the bees are also deeply interlinked with the quality of beans harvested. To ensure healthy hives and to promote sustainable beekeeping, Kelachandra Coffee has implemented several initiatives including training programs for local farmers, pollinator-friendly habitats, integrated pest management strategies and research studies in collaboration with agricultural universities and research institutions.
