Meet my dear friend Emily. On November 1, 2023, she retired from a long and illustrious nursing career. The day before, October 31, was her 70th birthday. Over the last 2 months, I've had the pleasure of watching Emily dive enthusiastically into retirement. She hasn't slowed down one bit! She got herself a Clipper card and started learning the San Francisco public transit system. She traded in her company laptop for an iPad and picked up the new technology with ease. I showed her ChatGPT and I think she uses it more than I do! She's hosted dinner parties and holiday celebrations, and we recently met for a Friday matinee of 'Saltburn.' Emily is a fine example of healthy longevity - I can't wait to see what she does next. The world and the US in particular are aging - the Census Bureau predicts that by 2034, older adults will outnumber children for the first time in our nation's history. We are also living longer than ever before. Retirement is taking on new meaning and a new style. My latest project focused on corporate succession planning and the longevity economy. Many succession planning programs prioritize successor readiness, leaving incumbent readiness as a personal issue to be handled by the individual. It's my mission to change that approach.
