Africans and the African diaspora nation is incredibly diverse, with people from different backgrounds, languages, and experiences. This diversity can lead to misunderstandings and gaps in knowledge about one another's cultures and histories. Building bridges of understanding and fostering dialogue between African descendants from various regions is crucial. Initiatives, educational programs, forums, and cultural exchanges can help in addressing these gaps and promoting a greater appreciation of each other's histories and cultures. Engaging in open and respectful conversations, learning from one another, and celebrating the rich tapestry of African heritage can help foster greater understanding and a sense of solidarity among African descendants worldwide. Efforts to recognize and celebrate the shared heritage and contributions of African descendants, whether they are from the African continent or the diaspora, can contribute to a deeper sense of unity and shared identity. It's important to acknowledge the unique experiences and histories that different communities have while also recognizing the common threads that connect them. These conversations, strategizing, developing a plan of action, and implementation is how to move forward. Congrats on the series!

I was deeply moved when I stumbled upon Chika Esiobu PhD TED Talk while doing some online research. Her talk, “How Africa Can Use Its Traditional Knowledge to Make Progress,” brought tears to my eyes by the end. As I navigate my journey of telling conservation stories, I often reflect on the immense potential of our indigenous knowledge—knowledge that is inherently ours, not imported from elsewhere. This knowledge, steeped in our rich history and practices, has been honed over centuries by our ancestors. As a young African and Cameroonian, I strive to uncover this knowledge, which often feels diluted and scattered, in my quest to tell authentic conservation stories hoping that it equally helps me feel more grounded to my roots. I yearn to learn more about the heroes in our history who have been overlooked by current academic curricula. It is disappointing that much of what we’re taught was discovered in Africa, right under the noses of our forefathers, is credited to outsiders who traveled from distant lands. How does this history inspire the present and future, and show us that we as young Africans, can be discoverers, with something immense to offer. There is a pressing need to rewrite our history and fill in the missing details. We are powerful, and it is crucial that when we look back in moments of doubt, our history reminds us by accurately telling our story and reflecting our achievements and resilience. Chika Esiobu PhD concluded her talk with a powerful message: "I am convinced that Africa’s further transformation rest in the acknowledgement, validation and mainstreaming of Africa’s own traditional, authentic, original indigenous knowledge in education, research, policy making and across sectors . This is not going to be easy for Africa, it is not going to be easy for a people use to been told how to think, what to do, how to go about it, a people long subjected to the intellectual guidance and direction of others be it colonial masters, "aid industry" or international news media but it is a task we have to do to make progress.” https://lnkd.in/eVs6FwgU
