Today marks the 10th anniversary of Safeway Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors program, dedicated to helping people experiencing hunger and food insecurity. In reflection, let's revisit how the NorCal Division contributed to nourishing our neighbors and strengthening our communities last year. Thanks to the ongoing support of our associates, customers, and community partners to lift up our neighborhoods.
For many individuals and families in our neighborhoods, food insecurity is a daily struggle. Food insecurity is a harsh reality for too many of our neighbors. No one should have to worry about where their next meal will come from. By coming together as a community and supporting hunger relief efforts, Safeway is reducing food insecurity at the local level so all of our neighbors thrive and have access to the nourishing food they need every day. Last year, with the support of our stores and generous customers, Safeway, along with the Safeway Foundation, donated more than $40 million in food and financial support to charitable organizations across Northern California, Hawaii. And Nevada, through our Nourishing Neighbors campaign, Safeway enabled more than 13 million meals, including 336 breakfast for kids and connected 422,000 people to SNAP benefits. Our stores donated more than 9 million of food to local Feeding America organizations through our Fresh Rescue food donation programs. These donations help community organizations distribute food to those most in need in our neighborhoods. Second Harvest distributes food to nearly 400 partner agencies at over 900 sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Our Grocery Rescue program connects these partner agencies like churches, shelters, food pantries with reputable retailers like Safeway to pick up excess food donations since the launch of Safeways Fresh Rescue. Donation Program In March of 2022, we've partnered with 58 stores to donate healthy, perishable foods on a weekly basis. In the past year, Safeways program provided 1.7 million meals. Neighbors in need receive produce, dairy, deli and frozen items. These donations make it possible for Second Harvest to meet the growing need of food assistance in the communities we serve and positively impact the environment. We appreciate your partnership. For the 14th year, we were proud to team up with NBC Big Area and Telemundo for the Fall Nourishing Neighbors campaign and host food bank volunteers for our annual Community Volunteer Day during the summer and fall Nourishing Neighbors campaigns. This effort resulted in $5. 3 million in donations collected at the check stands to provide gift cards and product donations to more than 55 local hunger relief organizations. Did you know that one in four people in Sacramento are risk? Hunger. That is why Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services is so appreciative. Big hearted donors like Safeway for helping us feed our community. Every month we provide nourishing food to more than 135 food pantries and together we're able to peak over 291,000 individuals every month. In 2023, our partnership had a big year. Thanks to generous donations of community members for the Nursing Our Neighbors program, we're able to provide gift cards in the amount of over $136,000. Those gift cards allowed our community members in need to choose the food items that were most relevant to their dietary needs, which was especially appreciated during the holiday season. On behalf of Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, our food pantry partners and the community, thank you. Thank you to the store directors, thank you to your teams. We appreciate. All the work you do to improve food access in our community and we look forward to continuing our partnership. When the Lahaina community was impacted by the Maui fires, the Safeway Foundation donated more than $1,000,000 to support disaster relief efforts through a fundraising campaign supported by customers and associates. The funds raised benefited various nonprofit organizations with the goal of providing meals to those impacted in the affected communities. Along with financial assistance, Safeway donated food and water for evacuation shelters. We are grateful for the generosity of our customers and inspiring teamwork of our associates to help the Maui community. Our community partners are extremely appreciative of Safeways contributions the offer money through bank. We're truly grateful to Segways for their ongoing support in helping feed the hungry and blackouts. Avoiding food waste isn't that complicated. Denver's local nonprofit, We Don't Waste (WDW), has saved over 50 million pounds of fresh food since 2009, mitigating an estimated 97 million pounds of CO2. ⬇ ⬇
It starts with partnership - WDW has developed an efficient pipeline to invite local Denver businesses and organizations to their food donor network.
Simplicity creates volume and consistency - WDW's team handles all the labor and logistics involved in the food donation process. All food-donor organizations have to do is hand their waste over. In this way, their network of partners grows by word-of-mouth. and partners see no reason to leave the network.
Efficient distribution = more donations - The faster food goes out the door and into the hands of the hungry, the more food donations WDW can accept. WDW's 2-pronged distribution system does this expertly.
a) Food is distributed for free to their growing network of partner food banks. WDW simply gives local food banks their food donations, who handle the distribution.
b) WDW's Mobile Markets specifically target 50 Denver neighborhoods with abysmally low access to fresh food. These "meals on wheels" type operations can set up anywhere and distribute fresh food on demand to anyone who needs it at incredibly low cost. The income is directly funneled into WDW's food collection and distribution efforts.
