As chair of the adult advisory panel, it is great to see this statement from the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Rocio Cifuentes, regarding the deplorable violence, fascism and Islamophobia occurring across the UK. One of the first pieces of work done by Rocio as Commissioner was the ‘Take it Seriously’ report which looked at racism within Welsh secondary schools. Unsurprisingly, and yet sadly, the report found high rates of racism experienced by young people of colour. With 22 recommendations made to Welsh Government, there is still a long way to go to ensure schools and communities feel safe for everyone. Without funding and proper investment in education and youth services, racism and issues related to extremism will never be properly tackled. Organisations like Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team - EYST Wales and VIBE Youth CIC do outstanding work in Wales - but need the right funding to do the work. Let’s keep holding politicians and decision makers to account to invest properly in our communities. *Everyone* deserves to feel safe. National Child Protection Week is happening now 1-7th September 2024. The aim of the week is to promote a safe and supported life for every child, now and into the future. The theme for this year is “Every conversation matters”. What does this mean? Conversations can be powerful and life-giving when we listen well and give people an opportunity to speak. It can be conversations with children about: • What is important to them • Their worries • Their hopes and dreams It can be conversations about kids with their: • Caregivers • Peers • Teachers, professionals, mentors Jesus said in Luke 18:16 says ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these’” As we speak to people about their ministry to children let’s think about how we can equip people to have conversations that not only keep kids safe, but enable them to feel welcomed into God’s family. Are we listening out for things we can do or say to keep kids safe?
