With the implementation of KINEXT, the flywheel-based energy storage system developed by S4 Energy, the Kone Gottwald port crane at United Waalhaven Terminals (UWT) in Rotterdam is now fully electrically powered. The diesel generator that powered the crane in previous years has been turned off, resulting in both fuel savings and an immediate annual reduction of 500 tons of CO2 emissions. KINEXT allows the crane to operate entirely on electric power. The kinetic energy released when lowering a load is stored in the flywheel. When a load needs to be lifted, the flywheel provides the stored energy to meet the crane's peak power requirements. This combination maintains a constant and low power consumption from the grid, eliminating the need for investing in a larger grid connection. This innovative application of the KINEXT energy storage system is supported by the Smart Energy Systems program of the city of Rotterdam. 9moThat looks like a perfect application for the Kinext flywheel. Good to see it find its way to new markets!
