In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, demonstrating 'green' business credentials is more important than ever. However, this pressure can lead companies to drift into the realm of 'greenwashing'. In this article 'Fifty shades of green? ESG pressures versus the risk of greenwashing', S-RM's Belén Satorre, Associate Director, ESG – Human Rights, together with Robert Meade and Mark Hunting, both Partners at Bracewell LLP, explore the challenge of effectively communicating ESG progress, without falling into the 'greenwashing' trap. Unpacking the topic of Greenwashing: what is the role of culture and governance? When asked to assist with this recording I paused for a minute to give it some worthwhile consideration. What do I feel about this particular topic? A few things came to mind: - Surely, all will agree how Greenwashing is a matter of Ethics and Corporate Integrity? - Having been ‘around’ in the world of business ethics, corporate misconduct, and - more specifically - regulatory investigations for way over a decade, what has changed making ‘doing the right thing’ a particularly tough challenge of today? - Is there any value (at all) in looking into past anti-fraud, anti-corruption and compliance frameworks and approaches for guidance on how to prevent (and respond to) Greenwashing? - What will it take for companies to do the right thing, close the say-do gap and (start) to become Corporate Responsible Citizens? Unfortunately, I can’t say, and will not pretend, to have all the answers. I can say that I’m foremost intrigued by solid discussions on how learnings on Ethics, Misconduct and Regulatory (non-compliance) scandals from the past will help to move the needle in fixing the future. Happy to hear what others are thinking and to chat over coffee. Also, I will be present at the book presentation of Alison Taylor's “Higher Ground” upcoming Friday (https://lnkd.in/e8gxjsD4). Maybe I will spot some enthusiasts there.

Greenwashing is nothing more than the practice of companies trying to appear more environmentally friendly than they actually are ♻️ As sustainability, circularity, and ESG values become more important, this harmful practice is becoming more widespread. Despite being discussed more frequently, it's not always easy to distinguish genuine practices from deceptive ones. That's why we wanted to shed light on one of the six types of Greenwashing and provide you with the tools to recognize it. Do you believe raising awareness on this issue can help make us more informed? #Avvale #Avvaleyourself #greenwashing #greencrowding

Keeping up with ESG requirements can result in many companies inadvertently “greenwashing” - which is the practice of exaggerating commitment to environmentally-friendly practices. With greater scrutiny over environmental footprint by regulators and company stakeholders, it is essential that businesses ringfence themselves against greenwashing, and instead adopt various measures to commit to ESG practices. #greenwashing, or companies/people/organisations overstating their 'green' credentials has become common place. TIf competitors are doing it, the harm to you may be twofold: 1) you can loose business to the company making 'stronger' green claims, and 2) if companies are found out to be greenwashing, it can affect the whole sector as it creates distrust with the public of everything companies in general (or that particular sector specifically) are saying. So how do you deal with the threat of greenwashing? This is a complex question and I could talk about it for hours, but in a nutshell the best way to prevent yourself from greenwashing is to have a solid understanding of the actual environmental footprint your operations/products have and how it differs from the status quo. Having a quantitative framework, enhanced with qualitative metrics, will enable you to communicate from a position of strength. Same goes for general investor communications, especially in markets such as we are currently experiencing (in particular in the small cap space). My mantra is: if you want to make a statement, corroborate it, validate it. Conversely, if a company wants me to buy its products and is making claims about being x% greener, show me the proof and I may be willing to consider it. The below article is a food reminder that we also need to be aware of social and governance washing. Too often these two aspects are neglected unless their ar returns to be made and either the S or the G is central to an organization's identity. If you have any questions about any of these topics, reach out. https://lnkd.in/dCrfYC4e #greenwashing #socialwashing #governance #validateyourclaims
