Compliance professionals must be prepared to take the lead in managing the 'S' in ESG. That's the message S-RM's Natalie Stafford delivers in her article for Compliance & Ethics Professional Magazine by Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE). The social pillar of ESG comprises such varied issues as human rights, modern slavery, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), labour rights, supply chains, geopolitical risk, and data protection and privacy. These are all areas increasingly driven by regulation — the fact is, the role for compliance professionals is growing both now and over the next five years at least. Compliance is an adventure. Today I had the big pleasure of participating in a discussion about compliance, ESG and human rights with Aurélie Tournan from Amnesty international and the ÖCOV - Österreichischer Compliance Officer Verbund . With the CSDDD - Corporate sustainability Due Diligence Directive around the corner, the CSRD corporate sustainability reporting Directive in place and the German and French and UK supply chain responsibility / modern slavery acts with a strong focus on human rights, we have to integrate them even more in our code of conducts, supplier codes and ESG/Sustainability and compliance risk management system. Happy to discuss more on what and how it can be done in companies, let’s grow together and keep improving through constant learning. My Compliance 2024 will definitely focus on ESG, ethics & governance, 3rd party due diligence and human rights plus Labour conditions. #esg #humanrights #compliance #ethics #value #supplychainrisks #3rdpartyduediligence #modernslavery

Whistleblowing can cost employees dearly. But, organisations must catch misconduct early to safeguard their business. Traditional approaches to whistleblowing simply do not cut it anymore in today’s time. I'm delighted that myself, Mahesh Vasnani and Martijn G. Boone, will be attending the 12th GRC EMEA 2024 on the 18th and the 19th of April. Martijn will be exploring the limits of traditional whistleblowing at the conference, discussing the pitfalls and ways forward together with both in-person and virtual attendees. If you are eager to learn more about benchmarking for a successful GRC, Ethics, and ESG strategy, I would love to have a coffee with you there and discuss some more. There has been a lot of talk over the past few years about ESG disclosures and greenwashing risks, and how an effective corporate governance program is key to delivering shareholder and stakeholder value. I am always interested in the significance of an assertion (or the "so what" question). So I decided to ask myself: how can these broad ideas and values be implemented by forward thinking businesses? How do we go beyond the rhetoric and signaling and make things happen? I tried to unpack this through my discussion with Hussein Mosleh from SABIC at the Ethisphere APAC Ethics & Compliance Forum recently. In short: 💡 Operationalizing ESG requires both leadership buy-in as well as the tenacity to bring together cross-functional teams (and your business partners!) to deliver a cohesive and, dare I say, credible, #esg program. 💡 Using emerging technologies such as AI and other monitoring tools (including compliance audits) will help companies assess how they are meeting the relevant ESG metrics, both quantitatively and qualitatively by harnessing high quality data that is available from your business. 💡 Implementing ESG goals could also spur innovation and help transition legacy businesses to new areas of potential growth. It is not a binary choice or zero-sum game of doing the "right" thing vs returns or profits (harking back to the common view that ESG is being used as something to price-in risks vs. a value driver in a non-monetary sense). #corporategovernance #compliance
Join us this Friday (Dec 15) for our 2023 Asia Pacific Ethics and Compliance Forum. Session 3: Operationalizing ESG through a cross-functional strategy will cover initiatives and activities to create a successful ESG strategy. On this panel, hear from Gerald Lam, Baker McKenzie; and Hussein Mosleh, SABIC, discuss what it takes to move beyond a siloed approach and learn how to set up continued and coordinated effort across key functions.
