Stockholm Junior Water Prize | Switzerland’s Post

Corentin Chofflon, a brilliant student of the @Collège St-Michel in Fribourg (FR), was awarded the Stockholm Junior Water Prize | Switzerland 2024 for his project “L’approvisionnement en eau des cabanes de montagne romandes”, during the finals of the 58th national science contest Schweizer Jugend forscht | Science et jeunesse | Scienza e gioventù . In his research work, Corentin Chofflon developed a cartographic tool that can be used to assess the water supply situation of mountain huts exposed to the consequences of global warming. He did a rigorous analysis of different aspects affecting the water supply in the mountain huts, including climate change-influenced factors like the dramatic change in weather patterns in the Alps, the shift in snow melting periods and the melting of eternal snow, but also social factors like the growing public interest in mountain huts and leisure activities in the surroundings. During his research, Corentin displayed great personal involvement, immersing himself in the day-to-day life of the janitors of the Bertol hut, thus experiencing first-hand the challenges that climate change poses on the water supply in the alpine region. The finals of the 58th national science contest Schweizer Jugend forscht | Science et jeunesse | Scienza e gioventù were hosted by the Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg on 25th – 27th April 2024. A total of 116 finalists presented 106 projects in a public exhibition and were also interviewed by the evaluation commission of the contest. Corentin Chofflon exchanged vividly with interested visitors at his project stand and gave a compelling presentation to the evaluation commission. During the award ceremony that closed the event on Saturday 27th April, Corentin received the mention “excellent” for his work and was granted the Stockholm Junior Water Prize | Switzerland, which allows him to represent Switzerland in the international competition in August this year. During the next months, Corentin Chofflon will be coached by the Swiss Toilet Organisation and the Swiss Water Partnership in preparation for his participation in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, which will take place during the Stockholm World Water Week.  The Stockholm Junior Water Prize | Switzerland is an initiative of the SWP-Youth and is generously sponsored by Xylem, Skat Foundation, Swissmem Industriesektoren Pumpentechnik & Umwelttechnik, Heusser Water Solutions AG, and seecon gmbh. We are pleased to share the report on the Stockholm Junior Water Prize | Switzerland 2023. The awarded project emerged from the physics and mathematics corner and attracted significant interest among different sectors. Frederick Steinmann and Karim Malik won the Stockholm Junior Water Prize | Switzerland 2023 by constructing a novel, fully modular, and uniquely affordable IoT-Aquaponics Control Unit. Besides representing Switzerland in the international competition Stockholm Junior Water Prize, the young researchers attracted a lot of attention to their project among water experts and hardware and software specialists. Furthermore, they are willing to continue working on their project into the implementation phase and they were offered internships at Xylem in Stockholm. We are grateful for the support that Karim Malik and Frederick Steinmann received along the way, which helped them in the fantastic job they did representing Switzerland in Stockholm. Representing one's country in an international event puts great responsibility on one's shoulders but it's also a source of wonderful memories. Frederick Steinmann and Karim Malik have done a great job representing Switzerland at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2023, where they had the opportunity to meet the patron of the prize, HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. The prize offers a multifaceted experience where the finalists get to defend their project in front of an international jury, get to know some of Stockholm's historical buildings, participate in study tours to state-of-the-art facilities in water technology, discuss with experts attending World Water Week, and spend six days bonding with like-minded youth from all around the globe. The Award Ceremony with the presence of the Crown Princess as well as the Royal Banquet with the presence of HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden make this an unforgettable experience for the 45 finalists. "... I still hope to see a future where there is more common understanding of why water matters and more engagements on a human level rather than the political level to solve these problems..." Frederick Steinmann and Karim Malik made the most of their access to World Water Week to actively foster exchange with experts in technology, water management, and politics, to mention just a few. One of these interesting discussions took place at the booth of the UN Environment Programme, where Frederick & Karim expressed concerns that their generation has on politics, environmental protection and the role of technology in solving water challenges. They finished their visit to the booth with a message to the UNEP community. Karim & Frederick's engagement and interest in the pressing challenges of our time are both inspiring and encouraging.

Karim Malik and Frederick Steinmann's understanding of the water challenges they are tackling with their prototype and their passion for their project didn't fail to amaze the people gathering at the booth of the Swiss Water Partnership this Thursday morning. Our talented students were hosted at the booth on the last day of World Water Week, after 5 days full of activities along with 45 finalists for the Stockholm Junior Water Prize. Adding to the many exchanges of the Swiss finalists with experts during the conference, the presentation in a relaxed atmosphere at the booth gave rise to an interesting discussion. As they head back to Switzerland, they take back many learnings to continue working on the next stages of their project. Today, Karim Malik & Frederick Steinmann showcased their project to the Stockholm Junior Water Prize international jury. In three interviews scheduled throughout the day, the Swiss finalists showcased their innovative project and answered questions from 6 water experts with different fields of expertise, giving Karim & Frederick the opportunity to demonstrate the relevance, applicability and growth potential of their idea. With great presentation skills and a high level of technical knowledge, they delivered convincing answers to all questions that the jury formulated. Additionally, in between interviews Karim & Frederick took the opportunity to exchange with further experts attending World Water Week who were highly impressed by the Swiss finalists' skills and passion for using IT and electronics to solve water challenges. The winner of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize will be announced tomorrow (22 August 2023.)
